Chapter 9 - The empty hand

Vanessa’s hands shook violently as she reached down and pulled the lid of the titanium box open. She expected to see a thick, leather-bound ledger filled with financial codes and secrets.
Instead, she saw a single, neatly folded piece of white paper.
She picked it up, her blonde hair falling in her face as she unfolded it. It was a printed photograph. A still image taken from the mansion's security cameras, showing Vanessa slipping the stolen diamond bracelet into Grace's apron pocket weeks ago—a frame-up she thought she had executed flawlessly in the dark.
Below the picture, in Daniel's sharp handwriting, was a single sentence: I see everything.
Vanessa dropped the paper as if it burned her. She collapsed to her knees on the cold concrete, her beautiful, calculating eyes filling with tears of sheer panic. The empire she thought she was dismantling was entirely a mirage built by the man standing in front of her.
"You knew," Vanessa sobbed, looking up at him. "You knew the whole time."
"From the very beginning," Daniel said, his voice devoid of any sympathy. "You played a sloppy game, Vanessa. You treated my staff like garbage, you lied in my home, and you thought you could sell my family's legacy to clear your own mistakes."
He turned to the Romanov leader. "Take your men and leave my docks. Tell your boss that Vanessa Cole’s debt is no longer my concern. She is yours to deal with. But if a single Romanov crosses into my territory again, I won't be sending a warning."
The rival thugs didn't hesitate. They practically ran to their vehicles, leaving Vanessa kneeling alone on the concrete.
"Daniel, please!" Vanessa screamed, reaching out to grab the hem of his perfectly tailored trousers. "They'll kill me! You can't let them take me!"
Daniel looked down at her, his dark eyes like ice. "You made your bed with them, Vanessa. Not me."
He stepped back, turning his back on his former fiancée. He walked over to Grace, who was watching the scene with quiet strength. She felt a twinge of pity for the broken woman on the floor, but she also remembered the cruelty Vanessa had inflicted on her and the danger she had put them all in.

Daniel offered his arm to Grace. She hesitated for only a fraction of a second before slipping her hand into the crook of his elbow.
They walked back to the armored SUV, leaving Vanessa screaming into the dark, damp night as the warehouse doors began to slowly lower, sealing her fate with the shadows she had tried to command.
