Chapter 3 - The gilded cage

Adeline woke to the sound of soft piano music. She opened her eyes, expecting the cracked ceiling of her apartment, but found herself staring at an ornate, frescoed ceiling. She sat up abruptly. The narrow cot was gone, replaced by a massive, silk-draped canopy bed in a luxurious guest suite.

She looked down at herself. Her purple maid uniform and white apron were gone. Someone had dressed her in an incredibly soft, expensive white silk lounge set.

Panic surged through her. She threw off the covers and ran out into the wide, sunlit marble corridor of the mansion. She burst through the heavy mahogany doors of Elias’s private study, her practical shoes replaced by bare feet on the plush rug.

Elias was sitting behind his massive desk, reviewing documents. He looked up, his dark hair immaculate, his open-collar white shirt revealing the edge of his chest tattoos.

“Where is Noah?” Adeline demanded, her chest heaving, her fair skin flushed with rosy color.

“He is in the east wing,” Elias answered calmly, setting his pen down. “My private physician is examining his wrist. He has severe malnutrition and a lingering infection. It will be treated today.”

Adeline stepped back, wrapping her arms around herself. “Why are you doing this? We don't belong here. I’m just your night maid.”

Elias stood up, his tall, muscular frame moving with deliberate slowness. He walked around the desk, stopping just inches from her. The height difference was staggering. He looked down into her defiant, terrified eyes.

“You are not a maid anymore, Adeline,” Elias said softly. “Your father gave me my life. That means my life, my wealth, and my home belong to you and your brother.”

“We don't want your money,” Adeline whispered fiercely. “We just want to be left alone.”

“You are starving,” Elias countered, his voice dropping into a harsh, protective register. “Your brother is sick. You are stealing bread from my kitchen to keep him alive. You are not leaving this house. You will eat my food, you will wear the clothes I provide, and Noah will receive the best medical care in the country.”

“You can't keep us here as prisoners!” she challenged.

May you like

Elias leaned in, his light stubble mere inches from her cheek.

“You are not prisoners,” Elias whispered, his dark eyes intense. “You are under my protection. And in my world, what I protect, nothing touches.”
