Chapter 8 - The desperate wager

The heavy doors of the van slammed shut, and Adeline watched Elias’s tall, muscular figure fade into the shadows of the garage as the vehicle sped away.
At the underground clinic, a team of underground surgeons immediately took Noah into the operating room. Adeline sat in the cold, sterile waiting area, her hands clasped together, praying for her brother. But her mind kept flashing back to the mansion. She pictured Elias, standing alone against his own syndicate, fighting a war he started purely for her.
Hours passed. The surgery on Noah’s wrist and heart was successful. The doctors assured her the boy would make a full recovery. Adeline wept with relief, but her heart remained heavy with dread.
She walked over to the secure phone on the clinic wall and dialed the private number Elias had given her.
It rang three times before it was answered.
“Elias?” Adeline breathed.
“He’s a little busy right now, sweetheart,” Victor’s cruel voice echoed through the receiver.
Adeline’s blood ran cold. “Where is he?”
“He put up a good fight. The best I’ve ever seen,” Victor mocked. “But he’s trapped in the main foyer. He’s out of time, and out of men. Once we finish him, we’ll come find you and the boy.”
“If you hurt him,” Adeline whispered, a sudden, fierce strength rising in her voice, “you will never find peace.”
Victor laughed. “Goodbye, Adeline.”
A loud crash echoed over the phone line, followed by a sudden silence. Then, the line went dead.

Adeline dropped the receiver, her hands shaking. She refused to stay hidden while the man who protected them was being destroyed. She looked at the loyal driver standing guard by the door.
“Give me a car,” Adeline demanded.
