Chapter 5 - The midnight breach

A deafening crash shattered the silence of the hallway.

Elias tackled the intruder through the heavy wooden doors of the guest parlor, shattering the hinges. Adeline screamed, falling back against the wall.

In the dim moonlight filtering through the windows, Adeline witnessed the terrifying, brutal reality of Elias Baron. He was a force of pure, masculine devastation. He disarmed the intruder in a singular, fluid motion, pinning him to the floor. There were no words, only the sharp, agonizing sound of a struggle ending as Elias knocked the man unconscious with the heavy grip of the intruder's own weapon.

Elias stood up slowly, his chest heaving. He turned to Adeline. His white dress shirt was torn at the shoulder, revealing an angry, dark bruise and a deep graze where he had slammed into the doorframe.

“Are you hurt?” Elias demanded, his voice tight, rushing to her side.

“I’m fine,” Adeline gasped, staring at his shoulder. “You’re injured.”

Elias glanced at his torn shirt. “It’s nothing. Check on Noah. The perimeter is already secure; this was a lone scout.”

Ten minutes later, in the safety of Elias’s master suite, the backup generators hummed to life. Noah was safely locked in the secure bunker wing with Elias's most trusted guards. Adeline stood in Elias’s opulent bathroom, her hands shaking as she wrapped a clean white bandage around his broad, muscular shoulder.

Elias sat on the edge of the marble bathtub, watching her. His dark hair was slightly messy, his expression intensely focused on her face. Her fair, rosy skin was pale, but her hands were gentle.

“You shouldn't have jumped in front of me,” Adeline whispered, securing the medical tape.

“I will always jump in front of you,” Elias replied quietly.

Adeline looked up, meeting his dark, piercing eyes. The proximity was intoxicating, the air thick with a tension that had nothing to do with fear. But as she stepped back, her eyes fell upon a heavy silver ring that had fallen from the unconscious intruder’s pocket during the struggle. It was sitting on Elias’s dresser.

It bore a very specific crest. A crest Adeline recognized from the police reports a decade ago.

“Elias,” Adeline said, her voice shaking. “That crest... the police told my mother the man who ran my father's car off the bridge wore a ring exactly like that.”

Elias looked at the ring. It wasn't the crest of the rival Moretti family.

It was the crest of Elias’s own syndicate mentor.
