Chapter 6 - The lies we were told

The revelation hit the room like a physical blow. Elias stared at the silver ring, his jaw tightening until the muscles stood out in sharp relief beneath his light stubble.

For ten years, Elias had believed a rival family had run his car off the bridge, and that a random civilian had saved him. But the truth was far more sinister. His mentor, the old boss of the syndicate, had orchestrated the crash to test Elias’s survival, or perhaps to eliminate him before he grew too powerful. And when Thomas Hayes intervened, the old boss’s men had ensured Thomas didn't survive the rescue to tell the tale.

“He didn't drown, did he?” Adeline whispered, tears finally breaking free, her rosy cheeks wet with grief. “Your people killed him.”

Elias stood up, his imposing frame rigid with a cold, terrifying fury. He did not deny it. He did not offer empty comfort. He looked at Adeline, seeing the betrayal and heartbreak in her beautiful eyes.

“I didn't know, Adeline,” Elias swore, his deep voice vibrating with absolute sincerity. “I swear on my life, I didn't know. But I will make it right.”

“How?” she cried, stepping away from him. “You’re one of them! You’re just like the men who took him from us!”

Before Elias could answer, the heavy doors of his master suite swung open. Standing in the doorway was Victor, Elias’s trusted underboss, flanked by three armed men. Victor’s eyes darted from the silver ring on the dresser to Adeline.

“Boss,” Victor said smoothly, though his hand rested near his weapon. “The mentor heard about the breach. He knows you have the Hayes children here. He’s demanding you hand them over. They’re loose ends from a decade ago. It’s bad for business.”

Elias stepped in front of Adeline, completely shielding her from Victor’s view.

“Tell the mentor,” Elias said, his voice dropping into a deadly, frightening calm, “that if he wants them, he has to go through me.”

Victor sighed, shaking his head. “I was afraid you’d say that, Elias. You’re choosing a maid over the family.”

“I’m choosing the truth,” Elias countered.
