Chapter 15

Five years after the birthday party, Lily was six.

Dominic remained in federal prison.

Margaret was permanently outside Lily’s life.

That relationship was closed.

Rebecca remained Lily’s guardian.

The court no longer treated placement as temporary.

Daniel had progressed to unsupervised daytime visits after years of evaluations and consistent behavior.

No overnights yet.

No entitlement.

One Saturday he took Lily to an aquarium.

When she returned, she carried a stuffed octopus almost as large as she was.

Rebecca laughed.

“Did you buy the entire gift shop?”

Daniel smiled.

“She negotiated.”

Lily ran inside.

Daniel remained on the porch.

He no longer entered without invitation.

“Rebecca.”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you.”

“For?”

“Not teaching her to hate me.”

Rebecca’s expression hardened slightly.

“I didn’t teach her to forgive you either.”

“I know.”

That answer seemed to satisfy him.

Later that evening Lily had an approved video call with Dominic.

She held up the octopus.

“Daniel got me this.”

Dominic smiled.

“That thing looks expensive.”

“It has eight arms.”

“Then I hope it works eight jobs.”

Lily giggled.

Then asked:

“Do you like Daniel?”

Dominic stopped smiling.

Rebecca watched from across the room.

He could have poisoned everything with one sentence.

Instead:

“He’s your father.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Dominic sighed.

Six-year-olds had no respect for evasive answers.

“He did things to your mom that I’m still angry about.”

Lily hugged the octopus.

“Is he bad?”

Dominic thought.

“No person fits in one word.”

Rebecca raised an eyebrow.

He had stolen that sentence from her.

Lily continued.

“Can I love him?”

Dominic’s face changed.

“Yeah, kid.”

“Even if you don’t?”

“Yes.”

“Do you?”

“I don’t know.”

That was true too.

The call ended.

Lily sat at the kitchen table afterward drawing three people.

Rebecca.

Dominic.

Daniel.

Then she stopped beside Daniel’s figure.

“Rebecca?”

“Yes?”

“If Daniel is my dad, does that mean I have to live with him someday?”

“No.”

“Do I have to call him Dad?”

“No.”

“Do I have to forgive what he did to Mommy?”

“No.”

Lily considered that carefully.

“Can I just like going to the aquarium with him?”

“Yes.”

She returned to coloring.

Almost everything had reached an answer.

The DNA report established the truth Margaret had tried to suppress.

Ava’s court record was corrected.

Margaret faced consequences for restraining Lily and lying under oath.

Daniel faced consequences for his own false statements and failure to protect his daughter.

Dominic faced consequences for crimes that had nothing to do with the Whitmores.

Rebecca gave Lily a stable home that belonged to no family power struggle.

Only one emotional question remained open.

What kind of father Daniel would eventually become in Lily’s life.

Not what biology called him.

Not what Margaret had denied.

Not what Dominic wanted.

Whether years of honest behavior could become enough for Lily herself to trust him as more than the man whose name appeared on a DNA report.

Lily picked up a blue crayon.

Beside Daniel, she drew the giant aquarium octopus.

May you like

Then she smiled.

For now, that was enough.
