Chapter 9

The investigation returned to the original harassment case.

Police did not simply declare:

Daniel lied, therefore everything was fabricated.

They reconstructed the record.

Ava had sent angry messages.

She once appeared outside a Whitmore charity event after Daniel stopped responding.

She told a reporter privately that Daniel was Lily’s father before paternity had been legally established.

Margaret’s lawyers used those facts to argue Ava’s conduct genuinely felt intrusive.

That possibility remained.

Then investigators recovered the full text archive from a cloud backup Daniel had forgotten existed.

It changed the meaning of several communications.

Daniel to Ava:

Mom wants no direct calls. Use the private number if it’s about the baby.

Two days later, Ava used that private number.

In the harassment chronology:

Subject bypassed normal communication boundaries using undisclosed line.

Another.

Daniel:

Send me hospital estimate. I’ll figure out my half.

Ava sends estimate.

Chronology:

Subject transmitted financial demand totaling $18,400.

Another.

Daniel:

I can’t meet. Mom’s monitoring everything.

Ava:

Then tell your lawyer the DNA test already answered this.

Chronology:

Subject attempts to leverage alleged DNA evidence after contact refusal.

Margaret had seen the full messages before approving the shortened summaries.

That was clue number five.

Then Claire located a message Margaret sent the security consultant.

Do not include Daniel’s prompts. We’re documenting her conduct, not his.

The consultant replied:

Context may be requested later.

Margaret:

Later is later. We need the pattern now.

No one had literally forged Ava’s words.

They had removed the pieces showing Daniel invited many of the communications they later portrayed as unwanted.

Then Ava’s old notebook produced another line.

They don’t need to prove I’m dangerous. They need me recorded as the problem before Lily becomes undeniable.

Dominic stared at the sentence.

The DNA result did more than tell a court Daniel was a father.

It changed the direction of credibility.

If Daniel and Margaret already knew the relationship was real, then every sworn description of Ava as inventing intimacy had to be reexamined.

Claire told Dominic:

“Part 10 is not going to be about a baby proving she belongs to a wealthy family.”

Dominic looked at her.

“No?”

May you like

“No.”

“It’s about what adults did to her mother because they needed everybody to believe she didn’t.”
