Chapter 2

Ava Vale had met Daniel three years earlier.
Not through Dominic.
That distinction mattered to her.
Dominic Vale’s name opened doors in Chicago.
Sometimes it frightened people before he entered the room.
Ava spent most of her adult life avoiding that shadow.
She worked as a landscape architect.
She lived in a modest condo.
She drove an eight-year-old Subaru.
She did not use Dominic’s security.
Did not borrow money from him.
Did not introduce herself as the sister of a powerful man.
Daniel met her at a commercial-property planning meeting.
He was funny.
Polished.
Apparently independent from Margaret.
For almost a year, the relationship remained private.
Daniel said his mother disliked anyone she could not control.
Ava told him:
“I’m dating you, not interviewing for your mother.”
He laughed.
Then Ava became pregnant.
Daniel stopped laughing.
He did not disappear immediately.
He attended one prenatal appointment.
Paid half of an early medical bill.
And agreed to private paternity testing because Margaret insisted Daniel should not “make life decisions based on emotion.”
The result came back before Lily was born.
99.99 percent.
Daniel was the father.
Ava expected the argument to end.
Instead, Daniel asked for time.
Then Margaret entered the story directly.
She invited Ava to lunch.
Ava later described the meeting to Dominic.
Margaret was polite for fourteen minutes.
Then:
“Daniel has a future that does not include being publicly dragged into your family.”
Ava answered:
“My brother has nothing to do with this.”
Margaret smiled.
“Men like Dominic always have something to do with everything.”
Then she offered Ava money.
Not to abandon Lily.
At least not in writing.
A “private family resolution.”
Ava refused.
Three days later, Daniel stopped answering her calls.
One week later, Ava received a letter from Whitmore family counsel.
It accused her of:
Harassment.
Threatening reputational damage.
Attempting to pressure Daniel for money.
And making an unverified claim of pregnancy-based paternity.
Ava called Dominic.
He wanted to go directly to Daniel.
She stopped him.
“No.”
“He knows that baby is his.”
“I know.”
“You have the test.”
“I know.”
“Then let me handle it.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because the second you walk into his office, Margaret gets the story she wants.”
“What story?”
Ava answered:
“That I’m using my Mafia brother to extort them.”
Dominic hated the word.
Not because it was entirely inaccurate about his life.
Because Ava understood how easily his reputation could be used against her.
So Dominic stayed out.
That decision would haunt him.
Within another month, Daniel filed a civil harassment petition.
His sworn declaration contained one sentence Ava underlined in red.
I have never maintained an intimate relationship with Ms. Vale.
Ava called Dominic after reading it.
“He’s not just denying Lily.”
May you like
She sounded shaken.
“He’s denying I ever existed.”
