Chapter 6

Ava’s former lawyer reopened her archived case file.
Dominic had never seen all of it.
Ava kept parts private because she did not want her brother turning a family-law dispute into an underworld war.
The file contained a full copy of Daniel’s civil harassment declaration.
Under oath:
Ms. Vale’s assertion of an intimate relationship is false.
Another:
I have never agreed that I am the father of her child.
Technically, that second statement could mean legal acknowledgment.
The first could not.
Then Margaret had filed her own declaration.
To my knowledge, my son has never maintained the relationship Ms. Vale describes.
Dominic stopped.
“She watched the DNA collection.”
The lawyer nodded.
“That is why Ava wanted discovery.”
“Why didn’t she get it?”
“She was going to.”
The temporary no-contact order had been issued early, before full evidentiary proceedings.
Then the parties entered mediation.
Not because Ava gave up.
Because Daniel offered to narrow the order.
A final consent arrangement prohibited direct personal contact except through counsel or a parenting application.
No judicial finding that Ava had committed extortion.
No finding that her pregnancy claim was false.
But the public impression remained.
Whitmore attorneys later described the matter as:
“A resolved harassment dispute.”
Ava hated that phrase.
Then Dominic saw an invoice from Whitmore Protective Services.
A private security company owned by the Whitmore family office.
Services:
Threat chronology preparation.
Message review.
Behavioral incident mapping.
The work occurred before Daniel filed the harassment petition.
Claire subpoenaed the underlying material.
The company had created a timeline of Ava’s calls, texts, appearances, and requests.
But the internal draft contained two columns.
Original communication.
Litigation summary.
Example:
Original:
Daniel, my OB needs a payment plan confirmed by Friday. You said you’d cover half. Please stop ignoring this.
Litigation summary:
Financial demand following repeated unwanted contact.
Another:
I’m not coming to your office. Have your lawyer call mine.
Summary:
Threatened workplace contact.
That was clue number two.
The chronology was not necessarily forged.
It was framed.
Aggressively.
Then Claire found the name of the person who approved the final version.
Margaret.
Daniel’s signature appeared beneath hers.

The DNA report now threatened more than paternity.
It threatened the credibility of the entire story the Whitmores had told about Ava.
