Chapter 15 - The employee who left

A former houseman named Samuel Reed contacted the investigators.
He had resigned eight months before the Bentley incident.
Why?
Helena charged him with a $6,200 rug stain after a wine spill during a private dinner.
Samuel had not spilled the wine.
A guest had.
But Samuel supervised the room.
Helena assigned:
Twenty corrective hours.
A $700 bonus offset.
He protested.
She replied:
“Responsibility travels upward.”
Ironically, not to her.
Samuel quit.
He never sued.
He found another job.
When interviewed, he said:
“I figured fighting Belluccis was stupid.”
There.
My surname again.
I had never met him.
Never threatened him.
Never knew his name.
Still, he calculated risk using me.
I asked Miriam:
“How do you fix something you didn’t personally do?”
“You change the structure that let your reputation substitute for policy.”
There.
Harder than firing Helena.
May you like
More useful.
