Chapter 16 - blood in the ink

Elena shoved the yellowed photograph into the inner pocket of her coat just as the heavy oak door swung open.

Lorenzo stepped into the room, adjusting the silver cufflinks on his dark tailored suit. His sharp gray eyes immediately swept the suite, lingering on the open safe, then dropping to Elena’s pale face and trembling hands.

"Elena?" His voice was low, carrying the gravel of pure exhaustion. "Are you alright? The feds have cleared the perimeter downstairs. The car is waiting to take you and Sofia back to the penthouse."

Elena pressed her arm against her ribs, feeling the sharp corner of the photograph digging through the fabric of her coat. Her heart was hammering against her breastbone like a trapped bird.

*My firstborn daughter, Elena. 2000.*

"I was just... gathering Sofia's medical records from the floor," Elena managed to say, her throat bone-dry. "I didn't want anything left behind."

Lorenzo walked over, his polished leather shoes crunching softly on the scattered papers. He knelt down beside her. Up close, Elena could see the silver threads at his temples, the faint scar near his left jaw, and the subtle, unmistakable shape of his eyes.

They were her eyes.

"You shouldn't have to clean up their filth," Lorenzo murmured, his voice softening with rare gentleness. He reached down to pick up a stray folder, his fingers brushing against hers. A jolt went through Elena's spine.

Then Lorenzo’s gaze stopped.

He was staring directly at the empty leather folder on the floor—the one labeled *Palermo Trusts – 2000*.

His entire posture stiffened. The warmth drained from his expression in a split second, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness that made the air in the suite drop ten degrees.

"Where did this folder come from?" Lorenzo asked, his tone dangerously calm.

"It was inside Clara's locked compartment," Elena answered, keeping her breathing steady. "Behind Anthony’s passports."

Lorenzo picked up the empty folder with hands that suddenly lacked their usual steady grip. He stared at the faded gold lettering, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched beneath his skin.

"Lorenzo?" Elena ventured carefully. "Whose folder was that?"

He didn't answer right away. He stood up slowly, clutching the leather binding against his chest, staring blankly toward the shattered window overlooking the city skyline.

"Someone who died a long time ago," Lorenzo said quietly, his voice cracking with an old, buried grief. "Or so I was told."

Before Elena could ask another question, Marco stepped through the doorway, his radio crackling with urgent static.

"Boss," Marco said, breathing hard. "We have a problem with the federal convoy transporting Clara. They just hit an ambush on Route 9."
