Chapter 22 - the brother's return

Lorenzo tapped the speaker button, keeping his eyes on Elena.
"Dominic," Lorenzo said, his voice completely neutral.
"Lorenzo! Thank God you're picking up," a smooth, cultured voice boomed through the speaker with urgent warmth. "I just saw the news reports coming out of New York. A federal raid on Clara’s penthouse? Gunfire in the financial district? What in God's name happened?"
Lorenzo didn't blink. "Clara betrayed the family. She took Sofia. We recovered the child."
A heavy pause hung on the line before Dominic spoke again. "Dio mio... that woman was always ambitious, but this? Kidnapping your infant daughter? Is Sofia safe?"
"She is home," Lorenzo said. "Safe and guarded."
"I am boarding my private jet from Malpensa right now," Dominic announced without hesitation. "I cannot leave you to deal with this alone, brother. With Clara in custody, the council will smell weakness. I will be in New York before sunrise."
"There is no need for you to travel, Dominic," Lorenzo said coldly. "The situation is under control."
"Nonsense," Dominic replied, his voice firm with brotherly insistence. "We are the last of the Moretti bloodline, Lorenzo. When one of us is attacked, the family stands together. I will see you at the estate for breakfast."
The line went dead.
Marco lowered his tablet, looking up at Lorenzo. "His flight manifest was filed three hours ago, Boss. Before the news of Clara’s arrest went public."
Elena felt a chill race down her spine. "He already knew."
Lorenzo didn't answer. He handed the glass wrapped in the linen cloth to Marco. "Take this to Dr. Sterling at the Queens lab yourself. Do not let it out of your sight. Do not transmit the results electronically. Bring the paper report directly to my study."
"Understood," Marco nodded, tucking the evidence into his coat and slipping out through the side corridor.

Elena turned to Lorenzo. "If Dominic arrives before the results come back, what do we do?"
Lorenzo looked at her, his jaw set like iron. "We welcome him home. And we watch every breath he takes."
