Chapter 17 - a ghost's name

The drive back to the Moretti estate was dead silent. Sofia slept soundly in the rear-facing car seat between Elena and Marco, her tiny chest rising and falling in rhythmic peace, unaware that half the city’s underworld had just exploded.

Lorenzo sat in the front passenger seat, staring straight ahead into the headlights cutting through the rain. He had barely spoken three words since Marco delivered the news.

"Did Clara survive the ambush?" Elena asked quietly, breaking the heavy silence.

Marco glanced in the rearview mirror, his face grim. "The transport vehicle rolled, but the armor held. Two federal marshals are injured. Clara was pulled out alive and moved to a black site near the Navy Yard. Whoever hit them wasn't trying to rescue her, Elena."

Elena frowned. "Then what were they doing?"

"They were trying to silence her," Marco said grimly. "Someone with deep pockets and military-grade firepower wanted Clara dead before she could sit down with the U.S. Attorney."

Lorenzo finally turned his head slightly toward the back. "Anthony talked in the interrogation room before the feds took him. He told them Clara was taking orders from someone inside my foundation."

Elena’s hand slid into her coat pocket, her fingers tracing the edge of the photograph. "Inside the foundation? Who?"

"Anthony didn't have a name," Lorenzo said, his voice flat and dangerous. "Only a code name. *Il Notaio.* The Notary. The person who managed the offshore trusts in Sicily twenty-four years ago."

Elena felt the breath leave her lungs. *Sicily. Twenty-four years ago.*

"Lorenzo," Elena began, her voice carefully measured. "Back in the suite... you mentioned someone died. Who was the woman in Sicily?"

Marco’s eyes flashed in the rearview mirror, sending Elena a sharp, warning glance. But Lorenzo didn't snap. Instead, he closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the leather headrest.

"Her name was Francesca Castiglione," Lorenzo said, speaking so softly Elena had to lean forward to hear him over the hum of the engine. "She was the only woman I ever truly loved. Twenty-four years ago, our estate in Palermo was bombed. They pulled Francesca’s body from the rubble three days later."

Elena gripped the armrest until her knuckles turned white. "And... your child?"

Lorenzo didn't open his eyes, but a single tear cut through the lines of his weathered face.

"They never found her body," Lorenzo whispered. "Just a baby blanket covered in blood. My brother Dominic told me the explosion was too close. He told me there was nothing left to bury."

Elena stared at the back of Lorenzo's head, the secret screaming inside her chest. But just as she opened her mouth, Marco’s phone buzzed loudly on the center console.

Marco tapped the speaker. "Speak."

A frantic voice came through the line: "Marco, get the boss inside immediately. Someone just breached the west gate of the estate."
