Chapter 18 - the crescent mark

Tires screeched as Marco hurled the armored SUV through the estate's heavy iron gates, skidding to a halt in front of the stone portico. Armed security guards in tactical gear instantly surrounded the vehicle, weapons raised, scanning the dark perimeter of the pine trees.
"Stay down!" Marco barked, drawing his sidearm from under his jacket.
Lorenzo was already moving. He stepped out of the vehicle with ruthless efficiency, his coat billowing behind him. "Secure the nursery! Lockdown Protocol Alpha!"
Elena unbuckled Sofia's carrier with trembling hands, shielding the infant against her chest. As she scrambled out of the backseat, her coat caught on the door latch, the fabric pulling open at her collar.
Lorenzo turned to shield her, grabbing her upper arm to pull her toward the fortified front entrance.
In the blinding glare of the floodlights, Elena's shirt pulled aside, fully exposing the small, crescent-shaped birthmark right below her left collarbone.
Lorenzo froze.
His grip on her arm tightened, not with violence, but with a shock so violent his breath hitched audibly. His gaze locked onto the crescent mark.
"Where did you get that?" Lorenzo demanded, his voice trembling in a way Elena had never heard before.
"I... I was born with it," Elena stammered, pulling Sofia closer. "Lorenzo, we need to get inside!"
"Boss! Incoming vehicle at the perimeter!" a guard shouted from the lawn.
Lorenzo didn't move. He stared at Elena’s collarbone as if looking through twenty-four years of ghosts. He reached out a hand, his fingers stopping mere millimeters from her skin.
"Francesca had that exact mark," he whispered, his eyes wide with disbelief. "In that exact spot."
"Boss, move now!" Marco grabbed Lorenzo's shoulder, physically dragging him across the threshold just as a burst of automatic gunfire echoed from the far woods, chipping stone off the portico pillars.
The heavy steel doors slammed shut, the hydraulic locks engaging with a resounding thud.
Elena leaned against the marble wall of the foyer, gasping for air, her heart pounding against her ribs. Sofia began to wail, terrified by the loud thuds and slamming doors.
Elena unbuttoned her coat to comfort the baby, and as she did, the yellowed photograph slipped from her inner pocket, landing face-up on the polished marble floor between her feet and Lorenzo’s.

Lorenzo looked down.
His face went completely white.
