Chapter 1 - THE SECOND MATCH

The charity gala was supposed to be uncomplicated.

That alone should have warned Dominic Bellini.

The ballroom of the Bellini estate glowed beneath crystal chandeliers. White orchids climbed silver columns. A jazz quartet played near the terrace doors while more than two hundred guests moved between auction tables and champagne towers.

Dominic tolerated events like this because Lila loved them.

Not the speeches.

Not the donors.

The desserts.

His eight-year-old daughter had spent twenty minutes studying a tray of miniature chocolate cakes as if evaluating diamonds.

Dominic stood across the room speaking with two hospital trustees when he saw Veronica approach her.

His fiancée looked flawless.

Silver gown.

Diamond necklace.

Perfect posture.

The sort of woman who entered rooms as though the furniture had been arranged for her.

Dominic had once admired that.

Then Veronica reached down and took Lila’s dessert plate.

Lila looked up.

“That’s mine.”

Veronica said something Dominic could not hear.

Then she dropped the plate.

Porcelain struck marble.

Chocolate scattered across the floor.

Lila stepped backward.

Veronica grabbed her shoulder.

Hard enough that the little girl twisted.

Dominic started moving.

Then Veronica shoved.

Not violently enough to send Lila to the floor.

Enough to send her backward into a velvet banquet chair.

The chair rocked.

Lila gasped.

Dominic heard Veronica clearly this time.

“Your bloodline ends with you.”

The room around them did not go silent immediately.

Not everyone had noticed.

Dominic had.

That was enough.

He crossed the ballroom.

“Veronica.”

She turned.

For half a second, surprise appeared.

Then the polished expression returned.

“Dominic.”

He crouched beside Lila first.

Always Lila first.

“You hurt?”

She shook her head.

Her eyes were wet.

Dominic touched her shoulder gently.

“Stay beside me.”

Then he stood.

“Explain that.”

Veronica glanced toward the broken plate.

“She was being rude.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Lila suddenly tugged his jacket.

“Daddy.”

Dominic looked down.

She held a small black jewelry box.

Veronica’s face changed.

That caught him immediately.

“Where did you get that?”

Lila looked frightened.

“In her room.”

Veronica stepped forward.

“Give it to me.”

Dominic moved Lila behind him.

“No.”

“It’s mine.”

“So is the explanation.”

Lila opened the box.

There was no jewelry inside.

Only folded paper.

A laboratory logo appeared at the top.

Dominic recognized what it was before he understood why it existed.

DNA relationship analysis.

Subject A:

LILA BELLINI.

His expression hardened.

“When did you test my daughter?”

Veronica said nothing.

Dominic unfolded the second page.

A second profile.

The name had been partially covered by a laboratory privacy label, but the result was visible.

CLOSE BIOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIP DETECTED.

Dominic stared.

Lila looked up.

“What does that mean?”

He folded the paper halfway.

“Something adults need to explain.”

Veronica laughed softly.

He looked at her.

She had just shoved his daughter.

He had just discovered she obtained Lila’s DNA without his knowledge.

And still—

she looked confident.

Dominic placed Lila behind his security chief, Michael Rourke.

“Stay with Uncle Mike.”

Lila obeyed.

Dominic walked toward Veronica.

“What did you take from her?”

She smiled.

“A hairbrush gave me everything I needed.”

Dominic’s hand tightened.

“You secretly tested my daughter.”

“I verified something.”

“What?”

Veronica looked toward Lila.

Then back.

“She isn’t the only Bellini child who matters.”

Dominic felt the sentence land slowly.

He had one child.

One.

Lila.

Her mother, Isabella, had died four years earlier after a sudden illness.

Dominic had never remarried.

Until now.

He took another step.

“Who is on this report?”

Veronica’s mouth curved.

“Read the second match.”

Dominic unfolded the page fully.

The exact name was hidden beneath the privacy label.

But a reference number remained.

Age category:

MINOR.

Sex:

MALE.

Relationship estimate:

FIRST-DEGREE BIOLOGICAL RELATIVE CONSISTENT WITH SHARED PATERNAL LINE.

Dominic’s face went still.

A boy.

A child.

Related closely enough to Lila that the laboratory had flagged the sample.

His first thought was impossible.

Then became possible.

Then dangerous.

“Who is the other child?”

Veronica slowly smiled.

She expected that question.

Which meant she had planned this moment long before Lila found the report.

Around them, conversations finally died.

Guests watched.

Dominic did not care.

Veronica stepped closer.

“If you want his name…”

She lowered her voice.

“…you’ll stop treating me like I’m replaceable.”

Dominic stared.

Then he looked at the woman he had intended to marry in six weeks.

For the first time, he did not see his fiancée.

He saw someone holding information about a child as currency.

And that was something Dominic Bellini understood very well.

“Michael.”

His security chief approached.

“Sir.”

“Take Lila upstairs.”

Veronica’s smile faded.

Dominic continued.

“No one leaves with records, devices, or anything belonging to this estate until counsel preserves what we legally own.”

Veronica’s eyes narrowed.

“You cannot imprison guests.”

“I’m not.”

Dominic looked at the room.

“The gala is over.”

People began moving.

Quickly.

Dominic returned his gaze to Veronica.

“You can leave whenever you want.”

Then:

“But the engagement is finished.”

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

“You don’t know what you’re giving up.”

Dominic folded the DNA report.

“No.”

His voice went cold.

“But I know exactly what I’m protecting.”

Upstairs, Lila began crying.

Dominic heard it.

He turned away from Veronica immediately.

That frightened her more than anger would have.

May you like

Because she had built her plan around being important enough to stop him.

She had just discovered she was not.
