Chapter 12 - EQUAL

The Bellini trust reform took ten months.
Longer than Dominic wanted.
Shorter than Grace feared.
Salvatore’s male-preference structure was dismantled where legally possible and neutralized elsewhere through new entities and beneficiary agreements.
Independent trustees took over governance.
Lila’s future interests became equal in value and dignity to any male descendant.
Ethan’s rights under Gabriel’s personal trust remained completely separate.
No rivalry.
No zero-sum.
No “heir.”
Dominic banned that word from family meetings.
Michael forgot once.
Paid twenty dollars into Lila’s dessert fund.
She considered the policy excellent.
At the final signing, Lila and Ethan were not present.
Correct.
Children do not need boardrooms to prove they matter.
Dominic signed.
Laura signed Ethan’s relevant interests where appropriate.
Teresa witnessed one document and cried.
Grace asked:
“Why are you crying?”
“Because Salvatore would hate this.”
Dominic laughed.
“Then today improves.”
The biggest surprise came afterward.
Teresa asked to speak with Dominic alone.
“I owe you.”
“For Ethan?”
“For Gabriel.”
She explained.
Gabriel’s final months had not only been about protecting a child.
He was planning to reconcile with Dominic.
“He wrote you.”
Dominic looked tired.
“Everyone wrote me.”
Teresa almost smiled.
“This one I destroyed.”
Silence.
Dominic stared.
“You what?”
“I was angry.”
“Teresa.”
“He asked me to deliver it after Ethan was born.”
“You destroyed it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I blamed you for him staying in Chicago.”
Dominic felt old anger.
“Did the letter survive?”
“No.”
“So why tell me?”
“Because I’m tired of deciding what truth other people can handle.”
That sentence belonged to the whole family now.
“What did it say?”
Teresa’s eyes filled.
“He said he missed you.”
Dominic looked away.
“He said becoming a father made him understand why you were always afraid.”
Dominic swallowed.
“And?”
“He wanted Ethan to know Lila one day if you had a child.”
Dominic laughed softly.
Gabriel got his wish accidentally.
Teresa continued.
“I’m sorry.”
Dominic was silent a long time.
Then:
“I’m angry.”
“I know.”
“I may stay angry.”
“I know.”
“But thank you for telling me.”
Not forgiveness.
Beginning.
That evening Dominic told Ethan.
Not the destroyed letter.
Only:
“Your father wanted us to know each other.”
Ethan looked surprised.
“How do you know?”
“Teresa told me.”
“Do you believe her?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Dominic thought.
“Because lying about that no longer gives her anything.”
Ethan nodded.
Then:
“Did he want me to know Lila?”
“Yes.”
Ethan smiled.
“She’s annoying.”
From the next room:
“I HEARD THAT!”
Dominic laughed.
Family.
May you like
Messy.
Alive.
