Chapter 8 - VERONICA’S REAL PLAN

Rachel Vale met Grace and investigators.
Not Dominic.
Better.
She turned over emails.
Calendar entries.
Draft trust documents.
Invoices.
Veronica’s plan became clear.
Phase one:
Locate Gabriel’s child.
Phase two:
Confirm biological connection secretly.
Phase three:
Research Salvatore Bellini’s old male-successor codicil.
Phase four:
Convince Dominic that succession conflict was inevitable.
Phase five:
Offer consolidation structure placing Veronica beside him as co-trustee.
Phase six:
Marry before disclosure becomes public.
Then—
use governance authority to move legitimate Bellini properties into a new holding company.
Who owned part of that company?
Veronica’s private trust.
Twenty percent.
Dominic stared at the diagram.
“She wanted to siphon control.”
Grace nodded.
“Slowly.”
Not enough to trigger alarms immediately.
Consulting fees.
Trustee compensation.
Minority equity.
Board seats.
The sort of theft that wears expensive shoes and calls itself restructuring.
But Rachel’s messages revealed another motive.
Personal.
Veronica repeatedly complained about Lila.
He still has Isabella’s portrait in the bedroom hall.
Lila controls every weekend.
He cancels on me if she cries.
I will not spend my marriage competing with a dead woman through her child.
Dominic read in silence.
That hurt differently.
He had wondered whether Veronica loved him.
Maybe she did.
But she resented the part of him already committed to Lila.
Love that requires a child to become smaller is not safe love.
Then another message:
Once Ethan appears, Dominic will finally understand children are liabilities unless managed.
Dominic almost laughed.
Managed.
Veronica viewed family like assets.
Exactly.
Grace warned him.
“Do not contact her.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
“I’m learning.”
The assistant also revealed Veronica planned to announce Ethan’s existence after the wedding during a private Bellini board session.
Dominic would be shocked publicly.
Trustees would panic.
Veronica would present the consolidation plan as prepared solution.
She expected gratitude.
Or dependence.
Lila finding the jewelry box destroyed timing.
Veronica reacted emotionally.
Grabbed dessert.
Shoved her.
Spoke too freely.
One uncontrolled minute exposed eight months of strategy.
Dominic thought of how many empires had fallen because someone could not tolerate a child holding cake.
Veronica’s attorneys began negotiating.
She denied financial fraud.
Claimed drafts were hypothetical planning.
Some documents supported that defense.
No transfer completed.
No trust signed.
Good.
Dominic did not need invented crimes.
The unauthorized DNA sample from Lila raised privacy concerns.
The physical shove at the gala had witnesses and camera footage.
The manipulation of Ethan involved misrepresentation but might be civil rather than criminal.
Accountability would be layered.
Not cinematic.
Dominic accepted that.
Then Teresa returned.
Not to take Ethan.
To apologize.
Laura was furious.
Ethan refused to see her initially.
Teresa wrote a letter.
No excuses.
I took you from school because Veronica convinced me Dominic would hurt you. I was wrong to make that decision without Laura. My fear of your family history became an excuse to control you.
Ethan read it.
Asked Dominic:
“Do adults ever stop doing that?”
“What?”
“Calling control protection.”
Dominic stared.
“Some learn.”
“Did you?”
The question cut.
He thought of his own security.
His own rules.
The life Lila lived surrounded by guards.
“I’m trying.”
Ethan nodded.
Good enough.
Then Teresa told Dominic privately:
“Gabriel left another letter.”
Of course.
“Where?”
“With me.”
“For whom?”
“Lila.”
Dominic stared.
“Gabriel died before she was born.”
“I know.”
“How could he—”
Teresa handed him the envelope.
Not labeled Lila.
Labeled:
TO DOMINIC’S CHILD, IF HE EVER HAS ONE.
Dominic sat.
Gabriel had thought of a future niece or nephew.
He did not open it.
Not his.
He gave it to Lila’s therapist and attorney first.
Age-appropriate decision later.

No more adults breaking seals because they were curious.
Another family tradition retired.
