Chapter 1 - The Touch of the Locket

The golden chandeliers of Grand Luxe Bistro cast a warm, polished glow across the velvet booths and crisp white linen tables. It was seven o'clock on a rainy Friday evening in downtown Chicago, and the dining room was packed with high-society patrons, corporate executives, and wealthy couples sipping vintage wine.
Alina Valdez wiped down the edge of table fourteen with a clean cloth. At twenty-eight, she moved with quiet grace, her long dark-brown hair pinned back into a neat, loose bun. She wore her pale-blue button-up shirt, fitted black trousers, simple dark flats, and a dark restaurant apron tied around her waist. Hanging beneath her collar, resting against her chest, was a small, tarnished silver necklace—an antique filigree locket her mother had given her before vanishing fifteen years ago.
Suddenly, the ambient chatter in the dining room died. A heavy, suffocating silence swept from the front entrance across the marble floor.
Alina looked up.
Stepping through the glass double doors was Dante Rosselli. At late forty, the legendary Mafia Boss commanded absolute authority without uttering a single word. He was tall, muscular, and ruggedly handsome, his dark hair touched with subtle silver at the temples, a light trimmed beard framing his sharp jaw, and a thin, dangerous scar running along his left cheek. Draped in a tailored burgundy suit, an open-collar white dress shirt, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes, Dante radiated an aura of lethal power.
Carried securely in his broad left arm was his nine-month-old son, Leo. The baby boy was dressed impeccably in a tiny white shirt, dark vest, dark trousers, and a small black bow tie, his soft light-brown hair and bright gray eyes scanning the room with unusual, calm curiosity. Walking two steps behind Dante were two broad-shouldered bodyguards in dark suits, their hands folded near their waists.
The restaurant manager hurried forward, his forehead glistening with nervous sweat, gesturing frantically toward the private VIP booth in the corner. He caught Alina's eye and gestured urgently for her to take the table.
Alina smoothed down her dark apron, picked up her order pad, and walked toward the corner booth.
As she stopped beside the table, Dante set nine-month-old Leo comfortably in his lap. Alina leaned forward slightly to place a leather menu on the white linen—and her breath caught violently in her throat.
Peeking out from beneath the open collar of Dante’s crisp white shirt, rising up the side of his neck, was a dark, detailed tattoo of a black dragon.
Alina’s hand trembled over the menu. The memory flashed in her mind like a lightning strike—her mother's frantic, weeping voice fifteen years ago on the night she disappeared: “If you ever see a man with a black dragon rising from his collar, Alina... run.”
Dante lifted his dark eyes, fixing his piercing gaze on her pale face.
"Alina," Dante said, his deep, gravelly voice calm and steady.
Alina forced her breathing to slow, clutching her order pad against her apron. "Good evening, sir. Can I start you with something to drink?"
Nine-month-old Leo sat in Dante's lap, his gray eyes locking onto Alina's face with intense, unblinking focus. As Alina finished writing the drink order and turned her body to leave the table, baby Leo suddenly twisted around in his father's arms. He reached both of his tiny hands desperately toward her, his small fingers open, making an excited, urgent little sound.
Alina stopped in her tracks and turned back.
Leo continued reaching for her, his soft face lighting up with an eager, joyful smile as he leaned his tiny upper body over his father's arm toward the waitress. Dante stared down at his nine-month-old son in utter confusion, his broad chest rising as he looked from the baby to Alina.
"Does he want me?" Alina asked softly, her voice shaking slightly as she looked into the infant's bright gray eyes.
Alina cautiously took a step closer to the booth. The moment she came within reach, baby Leo’s face beamed with delight. He didn't reach for her hands or her apron. He reached straight toward the small antique necklace hanging from her neck, his tiny fingers locking around the silver filigree pendant.
Dante’s eyes drifted down to the small silver pendant resting in his son's grip.
As the dim chandelier light caught the intricate hand-carved crest on the antique silver surface, Dante’s face slowly lost every trace of warmth. His sharp jaw set like granite. His broad frame went completely, terrifyingly still.
Leo held the necklace tightly, refusing to let go, babbling happily.

Dante slowly lifted his head. His piercing dark eyes locked onto Alina’s face with a cold, terrifying intensity that made the surrounding air drop ten degrees into liquid ice.
"Where did you get that necklace?" Dante asked, his voice ice-cold.
