Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Garage

Tears spilled over Alina’s fair, rosy cheeks as she clutched her mother's letter against her chest.

She turned around slowly, looking at Dante. The thin scar along his jaw, the black dragon tattoo rising along his neck—everything suddenly made complete, beautiful sense. He wasn't the monster her mother warned her about; he was the guardian who had kept her mother alive twenty years ago!

"You saved my mother," Alina whispered, her voice cracking with deep emotion.

Dante looked down at her, his piercing dark eyes filled with a quiet, profound warmth. "I promised your mother I would protect her legacy, Alina. And I promised myself I would find you when the time was right."

Before Alina could say another word, the heavy vault door echoed with a sharp, metallic strike.

Marco Vance stood in the stone corridor outside, flanked by six armed mercenaries carrying heavy assault rifles. His grey tuxedo was disheveled, his sharp face twisted into pure, desperate malice.

"It's over, Dante!" Vance shouted through the heavy doorway. "You're trapped in a concrete box! Give me the ledgers and the girl, or I blow the support pillars!"

Dante stepped in front of Alina and baby Leo, his broad frame creating a protective wall. He reached for his tactical sidearm, checking his remaining magazine with calm, lethal efficiency.

"Stay inside the vault, Alina," Dante ordered softly.

"No, Dante!" Alina begged, grabbing his arm. "There are too many of them!"

Nine-month-old Leo looked out from Alina's arms toward the open door. The brave baby boy didn't show fear. He let out a loud, clear babble, pointing his small hand toward the high ceiling corner above Vance's head.

Dante followed his son's gaze. Mounted in the dark stone corner above the corridor was an industrial fire-suppression valve connected to the main hotel water line.

A sharp, dangerous smile touched Dante's rugged face.

"Good eyes, Leo," Dante murmured.

Dante raised his sidearm, aiming precisely at the brass valve thirty feet away, and pulled the trigger.
