Chapter 7 - The Subterranean Vault

The elevator lights flickered red as the emergency backup lanterns clicked on, casting long, dramatic shadows across the small steel cabin.
Dante didn't panic. He reached up, pressing an emergency release lever built into the ceiling hatch, and pulled the steel panel open with his broad arms.
"Frank, do you read me?" Dante spoke into his earpiece.
Static crackled through the speaker: "Boss! Vance’s team detonated a charge on the main power lines! They have the garage level surrounded!"
Dante looked down at Alina, who was holding baby Leo securely against her shoulder. "We take the service tunnel to the private vault level."
Dante lifted himself through the ceiling hatch, then reached his broad hands down to lift baby Leo and Alina smoothly up onto the top of the elevator cab. They stepped through an access door into a dark, cool stone corridor beneath the hotel foundation.
Alina followed Dante down the stone corridor, her dark flats silent against the concrete floor.
They reached a heavy, reinforced steel door marked PRIVATE ARCHIVE - VAULT 4.
The door was equipped with a dual biometric scanner and two keyholes shaped like filigree crests.
Dante pulled his silver locket from his pocket, inserting it into the left keyhole. "Alina. Your locket."
Alina reached up, unclasping her antique silver necklace, and handed it to Dante. He inserted the second locket into the right keyhole.
With a deep, heavy mechanical groan, the dual locking bars retracted, and the six-inch-thick steel vault door swung slowly open.
Inside, the vault was climate-controlled, lit by soft amber lamps. Sitting on a central marble pedestal were three leather-bound ledgers, stacks of bearer bonds, and a sealed envelope bearing her mother's handwriting: FOR MY DAUGHTER, ALINA.
Alina’s hands trembled as she picked up the envelope, tears brimming in her eyes.
"Read it, Alina," Dante said gently, standing behind her like an immovable fortress while baby Leo rested his head against her shoulder.
Alina opened the letter. As her eyes scanned her mother's familiar script, her breath locked in her throat.
The letter revealed that Clara hadn't fled the Rosselli family out of fear—she had gone into hiding to protect Alina from Marco Vance, who had tried to murder Clara twenty years ago to seize the foundation deeds!

And the final paragraph of the letter revealed a truth that shattered Alina’s world:
Alina, my sweet child... Dante Rosselli was the young man who risked his life to sneak us out of the city twenty years ago. The dragon tattoo on his neck was his vow to protect our bloodline forever.
