Chapter 10 - a promise written in stone

The afternoon air at Graceland Cemetery was peaceful. The towering oak trees dropped amber leaves across the manicured green lawns, rustling softly under the gentle Chicago breeze.
Marcus walked along the cobblestone path, his dark trench coat billowing slightly.
Holding his right hand was Lily, radiant in her pink coat and ribbon.
Holding his left hand was Emma, walking proudly in her matching pink coat, her polished shoes clicking against the stone—no tape, no holes, completely restored.
Ten paces behind them, Marco stood watch beside the idling black SUV, his arms folded, a rare, genuine smile resting on his scarred face.
Marcus stopped in front of a private marble mausoleum. Carved into the polished white granite were the words:
*Grace Montgomery Blackwell*
*Beloved Wife and Mother*
*Her light shines forever in the dark.*
Marcus dropped to one knee, bringing both girls close to his sides. The marble surface was clean, flanked by two stone urns filled with fresh white roses.
Emma looked up at the carved name, her little hand touching the silver locket resting over her chest. "Is this where Mommy sleeps?"
"Yes, sweetheart," Marcus answered softly. "This is where she rests."
Lily knelt down and placed a single pink rose against the stone. "Mommy, look who Daddy brought home. It’s Emma. She’s my sister."
Emma stepped forward timidly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the old, battered teddy bear—the one that had protected her through cold nights, rainy bus shelters, and dark basements. Carefully, tenderly, Emma placed the teddy bear right beside the pink rose at the foot of the monument.
"Thank you, Mommy," Emma whispered into the wind. "Aunt Clara kept me safe, and Daddy found me."
Marcus felt the weight of seven years of grief lift from his shoulders, carried away by the autumn breeze. He placed one broad, protective arm around Lily, and the other around Emma, pulling them both into his chest.
He looked up at the stone, his dark eyes clear, resolute, and filled with unwavering purpose.

"I found her, Grace," Marcus spoke quietly, a sacred vow between him and the sky. "Both of our girls are home. And as long as blood runs in my veins, nothing will ever tear them apart again."
The wind whispered through the golden branches above them, and for a fleeting moment, the warm sunlight hit the marble stone, reflecting two identical pairs of bright, beautiful smiles into the glass.
