Chapter 7 - a knock in the night

At 11:30 PM, the storm broke over Chicago. Lightning tore across the sky, illuminating the sprawling penthouse living room in blinding flashes of white.

Marcus stood by the tall glass windows, watching the rain sheet against the glass. He had changed into a fresh black shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the intricate dark ink that coiled around his wrists.

A soft rustling sound caught his attention.

He turned to see Emma standing at the edge of the hallway. She was barefoot, holding her tattered teddy bear against her chest, her big green eyes wide with anxiety.

"Emma?" Marcus said gently, crouching down. "What are you doing awake, sweetheart? Can’t sleep?"

Emma shook her head. She took two timid steps toward him, then stopped, looking down at her bare feet. "The thunder is loud. In the basement, when the thunder came, water came through the walls."

Marcus’s heart broke into a thousand pieces. He didn't hesitate. He crossed the distance between them, gathered the frail little girl into his powerful arms, and lifted her off the floor.

Emma stiffened for a second, unaccustomed to being held, before slowly resting her head against Marcus’s broad shoulder. Her small fingers curled into the fabric of his black shirt.

"No water is coming through these walls, Emma," Marcus whispered against her hair, carrying her to the plush leather sofa. "I built this place. Nothing gets in here. Not the storm. Not the dark. Nothing."

Emma looked up at his face, illuminated by the city lights outside. "Are you really my daddy?"

Marcus swallowed the lump in his throat. He reached up, his rough, calloused thumb gently brushing a tear from her cheek. "I am. I didn't know where you were, Emma. If I had known... I would have crossed oceans to find you. I would have torn the world apart to bring you home."

"Aunt Clara said you were strong," Emma murmured, her eyelids drooping. "She said you were a king, and that kings protect their princesses."

"She was right," Marcus said, his voice thick with emotion. "And from tonight on, nobody will ever make you hide in the dark again."

Emma let out a long, shuddering sigh, burying her face into his chest. Within minutes, her breathing evened out into deep, restful sleep. Marcus sat there in the dark, holding his lost daughter, refusing to let her go.

Suddenly, his encrypted phone vibrated against the table.

Marcus picked it up with his free hand, keeping Emma securely braced against his chest.

"Speak," he whispered.

"Boss," Marco’s voice was urgent. "We found where Moretti is holding Clara. An abandoned freight warehouse near the rail yards in South Loop. But Marcus... Moretti doesn't know Emma reached you. He thinks Clara still knows where the girl is hidden. He’s trying to break her."

Marcus looked down at Emma’s sleeping face.

"Get the cars ready," Marcus commanded, his voice cold enough to freeze blood. "I’m coming down."
