Chapter 9 - two pink dresses

The morning sun broke through the Chicago clouds, washing the city in brilliant shades of gold and amber.

Inside the Blackwell penthouse, the aroma of fresh buttermilk pancakes, crispy bacon, and sweet maple syrup drifted through the halls. Maria had laid out a feast on the grand dining table.

In the master guest suite, Clara Montgomery was resting peacefully after being thoroughly examined by Dr. Evans. She was safe, fed, and completely protected.

Down the hallway, the door to the girls’ walk-in closet swung open.

"Look!" Lily squealed with joy, running her hand along a row of colorful, elegant dresses. "Daddy had Marco call the big store downtown this morning, and they brought all of these just for you!"

Emma stood in the center of the plush dressing room. She was freshly showered, her hair brushed until it shone like spun silk, a delicate pink ribbon tied in her chestnut curls, exactly like Lily’s.

On the vanity lay a brand-new dress—identical to the rose-pink one Lily was currently wearing. Soft Italian silk, a rounded white collar, and delicate pearl buttons down the front. Beside it sat a pair of pristine, glossy pink shoes.

Emma stared at the clothes, hesitant to even reach out. "Are those... for me?"

Lily grabbed the hanger and held the dress up against Emma’s chest. "Yes, silly! We’re twins! Daddy said twins get to match!"

Marcus stood quietly by the open doorway, his hands in his pockets, watching the scene unfold. His heart swelled with an emotion he had never known he possessed—a profound, healing peace.

Emma turned slowly, meeting Marcus’s eyes. "Daddy?"

The word hit Marcus right in the center of his soul. Every drop of blood he had ever spilled, every battle he had ever fought, meant nothing compared to the sound of that single word falling from her lips.

He walked over and knelt down before her. "Do you like it, Emma?"

"It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen," she whispered, her green eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I don't have to wear the brown dress anymore?"

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out the old silver locket—the antique keyhole with the three stars—cleaned, polished, and gleaming like new. He gently fastened it around Emma’s neck, letting it rest over her chest.

"You never have to wear that brown dress again, Emma," Marcus said, his voice thick with raw devotion. "You are a Blackwell. You will have everything this world has to offer, and no one will ever make you feel small again."

May you like

Lily hopped over and grabbed Emma’s hands, pulling her into a tight hug. "Come on, twin! Let's eat pancakes!"

Emma laughed—a bright, chiming, musical laugh that echoed Grace’s so perfectly it brought a quiet tear to Marcus’s eye.
