Chapter 8 - the reckoning at south loop

The rain drummed relentlessly against the rusted corrugated roof of the old South Loop freight terminal.

Inside, tied to a wooden chair beneath a single swinging halogen bulb, was Clara Montgomery. Her face was pale and exhausted, her clothes stained, but her green eyes—so remarkably like Grace’s—blazed with defiance.

Standing over her was Dominic Moretti, fifty years old, wearing an expensive camel-hair coat that looked ridiculous in the grime of the warehouse. Two armed thugs stood behind him, smirking.

"Where is the brat, Clara?" Moretti demanded, his voice echoing in the cavernous space. "Seven years I paid Vance to keep you quiet, and then you run? You think Blackwell won't kill you himself if he finds out you kept his kid in the dirt?"

Clara spat on the concrete floor. "Marcus Blackwell will tear your throat out with his bare hands, Moretti. And when he finds Emma, you’re dead."

Moretti sneered, raising his hand. "He doesn't even know she exists—"

*CRASH.*

The massive steel bay doors of the warehouse blew inward with a deafening roar as a customized armored SUV smashed straight through the barricade, sending metal fragments flying across the concrete.

Headlights flooded the warehouse in blinding halogen beams.

Before the dust could even settle, Marco and six heavily armed men in tactical gear poured out, securing the perimeter with military precision. Not a single shot needed to be fired; the sheer speed and overwhelming force pinned Moretti’s men instantly against the wall, their weapons kicked away across the floor.

Then, from the passenger seat of the lead vehicle, Marcus Blackwell stepped out.

He wore no armor. Just his tailored black overcoat, drifting open in the damp draft of the warehouse. He walked with a slow, terrifying rhythm, his dark eyes locked entirely on Dominic Moretti.

Moretti stumbled backward, his face turning the color of chalk. "Blackwell... wait! This is a misunderstanding—"

Marcus closed the distance in three strides. He didn't draw a gun. He reached out, grabbed Moretti by the collar of his expensive coat, and hoisted the grown man off his feet with one arm, slamming him violently against a steel support pillar.

The impact rattled Moretti’s teeth.

"You took my daughter," Marcus whispered. His voice wasn't a roar; it was the quiet rumble of an impending earthquake. "Seven years ago, you walked into St. Jude’s, bought off a coward, and stole my child from her mother's dying arms."

Moretti gasped for air, his hands clawing at Marcus’s iron grip. "It wasn't... it was business, Marcus! Collateral! In case your family pushed us out of the docks!"

"You put my blood in rags," Marcus continued, his eyes darkening to coal. "You left her to starve in bus shelters. You made her tape her shoes together."

Marcus leaned in close, his face inches from Moretti’s terrified eyes.

"I won't kill you tonight, Dominic," Marcus said with chilling clarity. "Death is too quick. By sunrise, federal agents will raid every single offshore account, warehouse, and shell company your family owns. Marco has already delivered the paper trail to the U.S. Attorney’s office. You will spend the next forty years in a federal penitentiary, watching your empire rot to ash."

Marcus shoved Moretti downward, letting him collapse into the puddle on the floor.

Marcus turned toward Clara Montgomery.

The woman was staring up at him, tears cutting clean lines through the dirt on her cheeks. Marcus pulled a combat knife from Marco’s belt and cleanly sliced the ropes binding her wrists and ankles.

Clara rubbed her bruised wrists, looking up at the towering mafia kingpin with trembling lips. "Emma... is she...?"

Marcus looked down at Clara, his expression softening just a fraction.

"She’s at home," Marcus said. "Sleeping in her sister’s bed. Safe."

May you like

Clara burst into silent, heaving sobs of relief, burying her face in her hands. Marcus reached down, offered her his hand, and pulled her gently to her feet.

"You kept her alive for seven years, Clara," Marcus said quietly. "For that, you are Blackwell family now. And no one touches my family."
