Chapter 2 - The Stolen Bracelet

The ambient noise of the ballroom died instantly. The orchestra halted mid-tempo, and the surrounding syndicate lieutenants froze in complete, suffocating silence.

Dominic Bellaro stared down at his daughter's tiny hand, then shifted his gaze to the tarnished silver bracelet resting on Elena’s wrist. His frighteningly calm expression didn't shatter, but the atmosphere around him dropped ten degrees into pure, liquid ice.

Vivienne’s eyes widened in sudden, hysterical panic. Her calculated composure evaporated in a single second.

"You lying little thief!" Vivienne shrieked, lunging forward with her manicured nails extended toward Elena. "Give me that bracelet! You stole that from Isabella's private suite!"

Vivienne reached for Elena's wrist, intending to rip the silver band away, but she never touched the maid.

Dominic moved with blinding, explosive speed. His broad right arm swung out, blocking Vivienne’s hand in mid-air, and brought his open palm across Vivienne’s face with terrifying force.

CRACK!

The sound of the open-handed slap echoed like a rifle shot through the cavernous ballroom. The sheer power behind the blow spun Vivienne completely sideways. Her diamond earrings flew through the air, glinting under the chandeliers, as she crashed violently into a velvet-upholstered banquet chair, collapsing onto the floor in a heap of crimson silk.

Gasps reverberated through the hall. High-society ladies covered their mouths; hardened enforcers stepped back in sheer horror.

Vivienne lay sprawled on the floorboards, her crimson gown disheveled, her hair ruined, holding her swollen cheek as a smear of blood dripped from her lip. She glared up at Dominic with pure, unadulterated venom.

Dominic didn't give her a second glance. He crouched down in front of Elena, his massive, battle-hardened frame looming over the kneeling maid.

"Take it off," Dominic commanded, his voice low, deep, and steady.

Elena’s hands trembled so violently she could barely unlatch the antique silver clasp. Tears spilled over her fair, rosy cheeks, leaving clean streaks through her light makeup. With a soft click, she unclasped the band and handed it to Dominic.

Dominic took the silver bracelet into his broad palm. He turned it over beneath the brilliant chandelier light.

Engraved along the inner curve of the silver band was a single line of calligraphy: 09-14-2019 — My Beloved Angel.

Elena gasped, her chest heaving as she stared at the inscription. Her hands flew to her mouth as a ragged sob escaped her throat.

"That's... that's the date my baby was born," Elena choked out, her voice shaking uncontrollably. "Seven years ago at Saint Jude's Memorial... They told me my baby died at birth."

Dominic’s breathing stopped completely. His dark eyes locked onto the date engraved on the silver metal. September 14, 2019—the exact night his late wife, Isabella, had allegedly given birth to Maisie in the private VIP wing of the very same hospital.

Dominic slowly turned his head toward Vivienne, who was struggling to push herself up from the floor. His blue-gray eyes burned with a lethal, terrifying clarity.

"Who told you that?" Dominic asked, his voice ice-cold.

Vivienne’s face instantly drained of all color. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out as she stared at the boss in sheer, naked terror.
