Chapter 6 - Shadows at the Gate

By eleven o'clock that night, the rain had begun to fall in heavy, relentless sheets over the Bellaro estate.

Inside the subterranean bunker, Dr. Harrison—Dominic’s trusted personal physician—finished sealing two sterile glass vials containing blood samples drawn from Elena and seven-year-old Maisie. He placed the vials into a portable genetic sequencer unit mounted on his medical case.

Elena sat on the edge of the cot, holding Maisie tightly against her lap. The little girl had woken up, her wide, dark eyes looking from the doctor to Elena with sweet, curious innocence.

"Does it hurt, Mommy?" Maisie asked softly, holding Elena's hand.

Elena’s heart leaped into her throat at the word Mommy. Tears welled in her eyes once again, but she forced a warm, beautiful smile onto her fair, rosy face.

"No, sweetie. It doesn't hurt at all," Elena whispered, pressing a soft kiss against Maisie's forehead.

Dominic stood near the bunker doorway, watching the two of them. For the first time in seven years, the cold, unyielding wall around his heart began to crack. He saw the undeniable love between the gentle maid and his daughter—a bond that no forged legal document could ever erase.

Dr. Harrison stepped up to Dominic, showing him the digital screen on the sequencer.

The screen flashed bright green: GENETIC RELATIONSHIP CONFIRMED — MATERNAL MATCH: 99.99%.

"It's absolute, Mr. Bellaro," Dr. Harrison reported quietly. "Elena Hart is the biological mother of Maisie Bellaro."

Dominic nodded smoothly. "Keep those results locked on three encrypted drives. Frank will escort you to the secure transport."

Dominic walked over to the cot, kneeling down until he was at eye level with Maisie and Elena.

"Elena," Dominic said, his voice deep and steady. "An hour from now, I am going to stand before the entire syndicate board at the Saint Jude Cathedral downtown. Arthur Vance and Vivienne are going to try to strip Maisie of her inheritance and destroy your life."

Elena looked into his piercing blue-gray eyes, her jaw setting with a newfound, fierce courage. "I'm not afraid anymore, Dominic. I lost my daughter once. I will not let them take her again."

Dominic reached out his broad hand, gently placing his palm over Elena's hand resting on Maisie's shoulder.

"Nobody takes anything from this family, Elena," Dominic promised softly. "You and Maisie are coming with me."

At that moment, the heavy blast doors of the bunker opened, and Frank stepped inside, holding a heavy leather briefcase recovered from Vivienne’s private safe in the east wing.

"Boss," Frank said, his face dark. "We found the original hospital intake ledger from seven years ago. But there's something else inside."

Frank opened the briefcase, pulling out a yellowed parchment document bearing the original wax seal of the founding Don Bellaro—Dominic's late father.

Dominic took the document, his eyes scanning the ancient calligraphy.

As he read the lines of text, his dark eyes narrowed into slits of pure, absolute shock.
