Chapter 8 - The Price of Silence

Rain lashed against the gothic stone facade of Saint Jude Cathedral in downtown Manhattan. The soaring stained-glass windows flickered with the warm light of hundreds of altar candles inside the grand sanctuary.
Parked along the cobblestone courtyard outside were a dozen black luxury sedans belonging to the senior syndicate bosses of the Eastern Coalition.
Inside the high-vaulted nave, seven powerful mob bosses sat in the front pews, surrounded by thirty heavily armed enforcers dressed in dark suits. Standing at the high altar, holding a thick leather folder of legal documents, was Arthur Vance. Beside him, handcuffed to a stone pillar under the guard of two enforcers, was Vivienne Bellaro.
Arthur Vance checked his gold pocket watch. "It is 11:55 PM, gentlemen. Under Section Four of the coalition charter, if Dominic Bellaro fails to present a verified, legitimate bloodline heir by midnight, his executive title is forfeited, and the Bellaro trust is liquidated."
"Dominic is trapped in his estate, Vance," one of the rival bosses growled from the pews. "Your strike team should have finished him by now."
Before Arthur Vance could reply, the heavy double oak doors at the rear of the cathedral were blown inward with a deafening boom.
A wave of cool night rain and wind swept down the long center aisle, blowing out half the candles along the pews.
Dominic Bellaro walked into the cathedral.
He moved with calm, unstoppable authority, his tall, muscular frame clad in his tailored black tuxedo, his polished leather shoes clicking loudly against the marble floor.
Walking directly beside him was Elena Hart, wearing an elegant dark velvet coat, her brown hair styled neatly, her posture proud and unyielding. And holding Dominic's hand, wearing her pale-pink party dress, was seven-year-old Maisie.
Behind them walked Frank and twenty heavily armed Bellaro enforcers, their weapons raised in lethal readiness.
The seven syndicate bosses stood up from their pews in sudden, tense shock.
Arthur Vance’s face drained of all color as he backed up against the high altar. "Dominic... this is a sacred coalition meeting! You cannot bring weapons into this sanctuary!"
May you like
Dominic stopped ten feet from the altar, his piercing blue-gray eyes locking onto Arthur Vance with cold, absolute fury.
"I didn't bring weapons to a meeting, Arthur," Dominic said, his deep voice echoing off the high stone vaults. "I brought an execution."
