Chapter 12 - The Barbecue Tongs

Police collected the tongs as evidence initially.
Ordinary stainless-steel barbecue tongs.
No modified weapon.
No sharpened edge.
No secret heating device.
Tool.
Later released.
My mother asked whether I wanted them destroyed.
“No.”
“Why?”
“They’re yours.”
“I don’t want them.”
“Throw them away.”
She did.
At least she said she did.
I did not verify.
No ritual.
No smashing.
The danger was not the metal.
It was Walter’s belief that he could decide when pain became instruction.
If we melted every tong in Massachusetts, that belief would still exist.
That distinction helped me with Lily too.
Tools do not choose.
