Chapter 5 - What Happened Before Lily Screamed

The investigators reconstructed the minutes before I returned.

Lily and Mason were playing with a foam football.

Mason ran backward.

Lily reached for ball.

They collided.

Mason fell.

Scraped knee.

No intentional shove.

Three adult witnesses agreed.

Erin saw only the end.

She ran toward Mason.

Walter called Lily:

“reckless.”

Lily said:

“I didn’t push.”

He told her:

“Apologize.”

She said:

“It was accident.”

Walter heard defiance.

Not accuracy.

He said:

“You don’t tell adults what happened when we saw it.”

But he had not actually seen the collision.

Another relative told him:

“They bumped.”

Walter ignored.

Lily started crying because Erin called her:

“spoiled.”

Then Lily moved toward the grill table.

Why?

Her water bottle sat there.

Not to touch food.

Not to touch tongs.

Walter told her:

“Stay where I put you.”

She said:

“I want water.”

He took the tongs from the edge of the grill.

They had been resting near active burners.

Hot.

He held them up.

According to one witness:

“Don’t make me teach you like Mason.”

That sentence mattered enormously.

Lily reached toward her bottle.

Walter caught her right hand.

Then touched the hot tong jaws briefly against the side of her palm.

Not a prolonged clamp.

No grotesque branding.

One deliberate contact.

Enough.

Lily screamed.

Walter let go.

That was the exact moment I returned.

The glowing appearance came from reflected heat and grease, not metal literally red-hot through. Source says glowing. In story we need preserve? Could say "seemed to glow in the heat." But Ch1 already "glowed faintly from heat". Fine.

Walter later told police:

“I was trying to scare her, not injure her.”

Then:

“I underestimated how hot they were.”

But he had already done something similar to Mason.

That weakened accidental-temperature argument.

He believed pain was acceptable.

The dispute was degree.

May you like

Law cared less about his personal vocabulary.
