Chapter 21 - Denise Earns Small Things

My mother saw Lily before Walter did.
Public park.
Ava and me present.
Denise brought no gifts.
Good.
She said:
“Hi, Lily.”
Lily stayed near me.
“Hi.”
Then:
“I’m sorry I didn’t help you.”
Direct.
“I saw Grandpa angry and I didn’t stop him.”
There.
“I knew he had hurt Mason before.”
There.
Lily looked at her.
“Why?”
Denise cried.
“Because I kept telling myself it would not happen again.”
Lily frowned.
“That dumb.”
I almost laughed.
Denise nodded.
“Yes.”
Then:
“You step? No. Different story. We don't reuse."
We need current scene. Lily asked:
“Were you scared?”
Denise took time.
“Yes. But not the way you were.”
Good.
Then:
“I was scared of changing the family. I should have changed it.”
That was the sentence.
Lily picked at grass.
Then:
“Can you push swing?”
Denise looked at me.
I looked at Lily.
“Your choice.”
“Yes.”
Denise pushed gently.
No dramatic embrace.
Fifteen minutes later Lily said:
“Higher.”
Denise did.
Trust begins in tiny instructions.
Higher.
Stop.
Again.
When child says stop, adult stops.

That became a rule Denise practiced more deliberately than anything else.
