Chapter 14 - Rafferty and Me

Our marriage nearly broke.

Not because Rafferty approved kennel.

He did not.

Because I could not stop seeing his silence.

Every argument returned to patio.

“You stood there.”

“I know.”

“You looked at him.”

“I know.”

“You didn’t even move.”

“I know.”

Eventually Rafferty said:

“How many times do you need me to say I failed that moment?”

The honest answer:

Enough times to make it unhappen.

Impossible.

Dr. Serena Walsh, our couples therapist, stopped us.

“Delphine, what would repair look like if repetition cannot change history?”

I hated question.

Rafferty answered first.

“Callum trusts me when something happens next.”

There.

Not speech.

Future behavior.

So we tested it in ordinary moments.

Callum said he did not want Ambrose’s birthday card read aloud.

Rafferty said:

“Okay.”

No persuading.

Callum refused a family dinner where Ambrose would appear by video call.

Rafferty declined invitation.

No:

He’s still your grandfather.

When Lysandra asked to take Callum to lunch and he said no:

Rafferty did not negotiate.

Small.

Repeated.

His father’s feelings stopped outranking Callum’s no.

My anger eased.

Not vanished.

May you like

Trust rebuilds through boring evidence.
