Chapter 1 - The shattered crown

The afternoon sun poured over the sprawling Moretti estate like liquid gold, catching the surface of the infinity pool and fracturing into a million bright, blinding sparks. It was a picture-perfect American summer day, the kind of afternoon that tasted of expensive champagne and smelled of fresh-cut hydrangeas. Laughter drifted across the manicured lawns, echoing from the wealthy, beautiful guests lounging under pristine white cabanas. But beneath the bright cinematic perfection of the party, a quiet, sharp cruelty was brewing.

Ellie stood near the edge of the water, her small hands smoothing the front of her pale-lavender birthday dress. She was a vision of innocence, her fair, rosy cheeks flushed from the summer heat, a sparkling jeweled crown resting atop her soft hair. She was eight years old today, the beloved daughter of the most feared man in the city, though to her, he was just her father.

Celeste watched the child from the shadow of a grand floral archway. At thirty-nine, Celeste was breathtaking, wrapped in an extravagant emerald summer gown that clung perfectly to her statuesque frame. Diamonds glittered at her throat and ears, catching the light with every calculated movement. She was Victor’s fiancée, a woman of ruthless ambition and cold sophistication, and she despised the little girl who stood between her and absolute control of the Moretti empire.

With measured, predatory steps, Celeste approached the pool. The heavy click of her heels was drowned out by the upbeat party music. Ellie looked up, offering a hesitant, sweet smile, but it faltered when she saw the ice in Celeste’s eyes.

Without a word of warning, Celeste’s manicured hand shot out. She snatched the jeweled crown right off Ellie’s head, her emerald gown catching the summer breeze as she turned and casually tossed the sparkling tiara into the deep end of the pool. The water splashed, swallowing the jewels instantly.

Ellie gasped, her rosy face crumbling in distress. Instinctively, the child reached out, her small hands grabbing for the air where her crown had just been.

Celeste did not hesitate. Her hand cracked across the child’s face in a vicious, stinging slap. The sound was sharp, cutting through the ambient noise of the nearby guests.

"You don’t deserve to wear it," Celeste said coldly, her voice devoid of a single ounce of empathy.

Up on the sweeping stone terrace overlooking the pool, the heavy glass doors opened. Victor Moretti stepped out into the bright afternoon light. He was a legendary figure, an immensely powerful man who ruled his underworld empire with terrifying composure. Broad-shouldered, rugged, and deeply masculine, he wore a fitted midnight-black summer suit with an open-collar white shirt that contrasted sharply against his fair skin. He was adjusting his luxury wristwatch when his sharp eyes swept down toward the pool.

Victor froze.

Down below, Ellie was standing by the water’s edge, trembling, one hand clutching her reddened cheek. Beside her stood Celeste, looking down at the child with unmistakable disdain. The air around Victor seemed to drop ten degrees in a fraction of a second. The relaxed, confident demeanor of the billionaire boss vanished, replaced by a dark, suffocating intensity.

He descended the stone steps with slow, deliberate strides, his polished shoes silent against the marble patio. Every step he took radiated danger.

"You hit my daughter," Victor said in a low voice. The words were quiet, yet they carried a weight that made the nearest guests stop talking and turn their heads in sudden, breathless anxiety.

Ellie looked up, her lower lip quivering. She pointed a small, shaking finger at her future stepmother, fighting valiantly to hold back her tears.

"She said I would disappear after tonight," Ellie whispered, her voice cracking.

Victor did not look at his daughter. His eyes, dark and unreadable, were locked onto Celeste. He moved seamlessly, stepping in front of Ellie, his broad shoulders shielding the little girl completely from the woman in the emerald gown. He didn't yell. He didn't make a scene. He simply walked straight toward Celeste, raised his hand, and delivered a devastating, open-handed slap across her face.

The force of the blow lifted Celeste off her feet. She stumbled backward, her arms flailing as she crashed violently into the towering outdoor dessert display. A spectacular cascade of destruction followed. Crystal glass trays shattered against the stone patio. Tiers of expensive cupcakes, delicate floral arrangements, and spun-sugar decorations rained down around her in a chaotic mess of bright colors and ruined elegance.

The party went entirely dead silent. The music seemed to fade into a hollow hum. No one dared to speak. No one dared to breathe.

Celeste struggled to her hands and knees amidst the wreckage. Frosting smeared the silk of her emerald gown; shattered glass surrounded her high heels. Her fair skin burned where he had struck her, but the humiliation burning in her chest was far hotter. She looked up at Victor, her eyes wild with fury and venom.

"Ask why her mother signed away custody," Celeste hissed in a low, threatening voice, a desperate attempt to regain control, to strike him where she knew he kept his secrets.

Victor stood over her, an immovable mountain of midnight-black fabric and cold authority. At her words, his expression changed instantly. The flash of protective anger dissolved into something much colder, much older, and infinitely more dangerous.

"You think that’s the truth?" Victor said coldly.

Celeste stared up at him. For the first time since she had clawed her way into his life, the manipulative, ruthless woman looked utterly terrified.
