Chapter 6 - The public facade

The grand ballroom of the city’s most exclusive country club was bathed in the warm glow of crystal chandeliers. It was the annual summer gala for the charitable foundation the syndicate used as a legitimate front, an event where the most powerful families gathered to shake hands, drink expensive wine, and quietly gauge each other's weaknesses.

Victor stood near the center of the room, a glass of sparkling water in his hand. He looked immaculate in a tailored charcoal tuxedo, his presence alone commanding a wide perimeter of respect. Beside him, clinging to his arm with the practiced grace of a seasoned actress, was Celeste.

To the rest of the room, they were the perfect power couple. Victor played the part flawlessly, nodding to associates, offering charming, polite smiles, and moving through the crowd with predatory ease. Celeste radiated icy brilliance, her fair skin glowing against a stunning sapphire evening gown, her diamond jewelry catching the light.

But the tension between them was a physical, electric current.

"You're squeezing my arm," Celeste murmured through a perfect smile as an elderly senator walked past them.

"You're lucky I haven't broken it," Victor replied quietly, his voice a smooth, terrifying purr that only she could hear.

Celeste felt a spike of fear, but she tightened her grip on her leather clutch, knowing what was inside it. The printed bank ledger was her shield. She just had to survive the evening, get him back to the estate, and lay her cards on the table.

Across the ballroom, Victor’s sharp eyes caught a subtle movement. One of his lieutenants gave a barely perceptible nod from the doorway. It was the signal. The trap Victor had been quietly setting for the past week was finally ready to spring.

"Excuse us," Victor said smoothly to a group of businessmen, placing a firm, unyielding hand on the small of Celeste’s back. He steered her away from the crowd, moving toward the private VIP lounges near the back of the venue.

"What are you doing?" Celeste hissed, trying to pull back, but Victor’s grip was like iron.

"We need to have a private conversation," Victor said, pushing open the heavy mahogany door of a secluded study and forcing her inside. He locked the door behind them with a sharp click that sounded like a gunshot in the quiet room.

The study was dim, illuminated only by a single desk lamp. Victor dropped his charming facade instantly. His rugged face settled into a mask of pure, lethal authority.

"You've been very busy this week, Celeste," Victor said, walking slowly toward a leather armchair and sitting down, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees.

Celeste swallowed hard, but she refused to back down. She opened her clutch and pulled out the folded papers, tossing them onto the low mahogany table between them.

"I know about the money, Victor," Celeste said, crossing her arms, trying to project a confidence she didn't entirely feel. "I know about the Cayman account. Ten million dollars to make Evelyn go away, and monthly payouts to keep her quiet. If the council finds out you've been lying to them about a massive security liability, they will strip you of your seat."

Victor looked at the papers on the table. He didn't pick them up. He didn't even flinch. A slow, chilling smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"Is that what you think this is?" Victor asked softly.

Celeste frowned, a prickle of unease washing over her. "It’s a ledger, Victor. It’s proof."

"It’s a piece of paper, Celeste," Victor countered, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "A piece of paper you illegally procured, thinking you were outsmarting a man who has built an empire on seeing five steps ahead of everyone else. You think you found my secret. You haven't even scratched the surface."

He stood up, his tall, broad frame casting a long shadow across the room.

"You threatened my daughter again today," Victor said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly whisper. "You went into the solarium and you terrified her. That was your final mistake."
