Chapter 8 - The confrontation

The study was exactly as Victor had left it earlier that afternoon, cloaked in heavy velvet and shadow. Celeste stood by the fireplace, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, the sapphire silk of her gown shimmering in the dim light. She was trying to project power, but the slight tremor in her hands betrayed her mounting panic.
The heavy oak doors opened, and Victor stepped into the room. He didn't lock the door this time. He didn't need to. He walked behind his massive mahogany desk and sat down, looking at her with an expression of absolute, terrifying calm.
"You wanted to play the game, Celeste," Victor began, his voice echoing smoothly off the wood-paneled walls. "So, let's play. Lay it all out. Tell me exactly what you think you know, and what you want from me."
Celeste took a deep breath, clutching the edges of her sanity. This was her moment. She had to strike now, or lose everything.
"I want the marriage to proceed as planned," she demanded, her voice rising, finding its strength. "I want full legal status as your wife, with all the financial protections that entails. And I want the girl sent away. Switzerland. London. I don't care. But she leaves this house."
Victor leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers. "And in exchange for these generous terms?"
"In exchange, I destroy the ledger," Celeste said, stepping closer to the desk, slamming her hand down on the wood. "I don't go to the syndicate. I don't tell them that the great Victor Moretti is a fraud who has been secretly financing a massive security risk for eight years. I don't tell them that the mother of your child is still alive and sitting on a fortune of your money."
Victor looked at her hand on his desk, then slowly raised his dark eyes to meet hers.
"You think you hold the sword over my head, Celeste," Victor said softly. "But you don't even realize you're already bleeding."
He reached out and pressed a small, hidden button under the lip of his desk.
The heavy doors to the study opened again. Celeste spun around, expecting to see Victor’s enforcers coming to drag her away. Instead, a man in a sharp grey suit walked in, carrying a slim leather briefcase. It was Marcus, Victor’s chief financial officer and legal counsel, a man who possessed a mind like a steel trap and a heart just as cold.
"Marcus," Victor greeted smoothly. "Please, show my fiancée what she actually found."
Marcus didn't smile. He walked to the desk, opened his briefcase, and pulled out a stack of documents, laying them neatly in front of Celeste.
Celeste looked down, her brow furrowing in confusion. They were bank statements, heavily redacted, but bearing the same account number she had found.
"The offshore account you discovered," Marcus said, his voice flat and professional, "was indeed opened under the name Evelyn Moretti. However, if your investigator had possessed the skill to trace the routing numbers of the withdrawals, rather than just the deposits, he would have discovered something entirely different."
Celeste felt the floor shift beneath her feet. She stared at the papers, her eyes scanning the highlighted routing numbers.
"The withdrawals," Marcus continued, "were not going to a woman in hiding. They were being funneled into a series of shell corporations, which were then used to systematically buy up the debts and assets of the Marzano family."
Celeste stopped breathing. The Marzano family. Her family. The syndicate rivals who had nearly destroyed Victor eight years ago.
"You didn't find Evelyn's payoff," Victor said, his voice slicing through the silence like a scalpel. "You found my war chest. The ten million was seed money. For eight years, I have been using that account to quietly, legally, and entirely bankrupt your bloodline, Celeste. I own your father's shipping company. I own your brother's casinos. I own the very ground you are standing on."
Celeste staggered backward, her fair skin turning the color of ash. "No... that's impossible. The syndicate..."
"The syndicate knows," Victor said coldly, standing up, towering over the desk. "They approved the financial takeover three years ago. They applaud my business acumen."
May you like
He walked slowly around the desk, backing Celeste into the center of the room.
"You thought you were a master manipulator," Victor whispered, standing inches from her face. "You thought you seduced me, maneuvered me into an engagement so you could spy for the Marzanos and tear me down from the inside. But I invited you in, Celeste. I brought you into my house to keep my enemies exactly where I could see them, while I dismantled your family brick by brick."
