Chapter 7 - The music box

The ride back to the estate was suffocatingly silent. Celeste stared out the window of the armored SUV, her mind racing desperately. Victor’s reaction in the study had deeply unsettled her. He hadn't been angry that she found the ledger; he had been amused. It was the amusement of a predator watching a mouse walk willingly into a trap.

When they arrived at the sprawling mansion, the night air was thick and humid. Victor stepped out of the vehicle and walked straight toward the front doors without waiting for her. Celeste scrambled out, her sapphire gown catching on the doorframe, struggling to keep up with his long, purposeful strides.

Inside, the house was dark, the staff having retired for the night. Victor headed directly for the grand staircase, but before he could take a step, a faint, delicate sound drifted through the heavy silence of the foyer.

It was a tinkling, mechanical melody. A lullaby.

Victor stopped dead in his tracks. The cold, impenetrable mask he had worn all evening cracked for just a fraction of a second. He knew that melody. It had been locked away in a storage room in the east wing for eight long years.

He took the stairs two at a time, bypassing the master suite and heading down the long, shadowed hallway toward Ellie’s room. Celeste followed, her heels quiet on the thick carpet, drawn by the sudden shift in Victor’s demeanor.

Victor pushed Ellie’s door open gently. The room was bathed in the soft glow of a nightlight. Ellie was sitting cross-legged in the middle of her large bed, clad in a simple white nightgown. In her lap rested an ornate, antique wooden music box. The lid was open, and a tiny silver ballerina was spinning slowly to the melancholy tune.

"Where did you get that, principessa?" Victor asked, his voice incredibly soft, stripping away the ruthless mafia boss and leaving only the father.

Ellie looked up, her blue eyes wide and defensive. "I found it in the boxes in the hall. The maids were moving things from the storage room. It has my name on it."

Victor stepped into the room and sat on the edge of the bed. He reached out, his large, rough hand gently touching the polished wood of the box. Engraved on a small brass plaque on the front were the words: For Ellie. My heart forever. - Mom.

Celeste lingered in the doorway, watching the exchange. She felt a surge of triumphant spite.

"How touching," Celeste sneered quietly from the hall. "A trinket left behind by a woman who sold her child for a comfortable retirement."

Victor’s head snapped toward the door. The look in his eyes was so violently protective, so brimming with raw, unbridled fury, that Celeste took a physical step backward.

"Go to the study," Victor commanded Celeste, his voice a lethal hiss that barely disturbed the quiet room. "Now."

He turned back to Ellie, his expression softening instantly. He reached out and closed the lid of the music box, stopping the melody. He gathered his daughter into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest.

"Don't listen to her, Ellie," Victor whispered into her hair. "Your mother loved you more than life itself. Everything I have done, everything that has happened, was to keep you safe."

Ellie clung to his charcoal tuxedo jacket, burying her face in the expensive fabric. "Is she really gone, Papa?"

Victor closed his eyes, a heavy, agonizing sigh escaping his lips. The web of lies he had spun to protect them both was unraveling, pulled apart by Celeste’s greed and ambition. It was time to end the game.

"Sleep, my little bird," Victor said, kissing her forehead and laying her gently back against the pillows. "When you wake up, the bad lady will be gone. I promise you."

He waited until Ellie’s eyes fluttered shut, exhausted by the emotional toll of the day. Then, Victor stood up, adjusting the cuffs of his suit. He turned toward the door, leaving the warmth of his daughter's room and stepping back into the cold, ruthless world he ruled. He walked down the hall toward the study, ready to utterly destroy the woman who thought she could conquer him.
