Chapter 11 - under siege

The front courtyard of the Valenti estate was transformed into a war zone. Heavy tactical vehicles smashed through the shattered iron gates, their high-intensity searchlights blinding the estate guards as automatic rifle fire tore through the grand marble entrance.
Inside the master suite, Claire held Mia close to her chest, ducking as the sound of explosions rattled the heavy wooden doors.
The deadbolt clicked open. Gabriel stepped inside, his dark suit jacket discarded, his tactical vest loaded with extra magazines. His face was set in lethal stone.
"Gabriel!" Claire gasped, standing up. "What's happening?"
"The front gate was breached," Gabriel said calmly, walking over to the heavy oak wardrobe in the corner. He pushed aside the hanging coats, hit a hidden release lever on the rear panel, and swung open a reinforced steel door leading into a narrow, stone-lined service tunnel.
"This tunnel leads directly to the subterranean garage beneath the guest house," Gabriel explained, handing Claire a small tactical flashlight. "Take Mia and go straight to the end. Do not stop for anything."
"What about you?" Claire begged, tears spilling over her eyelashes as she clutched his arm. "Come with us!"
Gabriel looked down at her, his expression softening for a fraction of a second. He reached out, gently cupping her cheek with his large hand.
"I have to end this tonight, Claire," Gabriel said softly. "If I don't stop Vance here, he will hunt Mia for the rest of her life."
Mia looked up at Gabriel from her mother's arms, reaching out her tiny hand to pat his stubbled cheek. "Be careful, Mr. Gabriel."
Gabriel smiled faintly, kissing the toddler's forehead. "I will, little one. Now go."
He ushered Claire into the dark service tunnel and slammed the reinforced steel door shut, locking it from the main suite side.
Gabriel turned around, drew two heavy custom pistols, and stepped back out into the main corridor.
The mansion was filled with smoke and the deafening roar of tactical combat. Marco and ten loyal Valenti enforcers were holding the top of the grand staircase, exchanging heavy fire with a dozen Vanguard mercenaries in black body armor moving up from the foyer.
Gabriel moved into the firefight like an unstoppable force. He fired with deadly, military precision, dropping three enemy shooters as he crossed the upper balcony.
"Don Gabriel!" Marco shouted over the roar of gunfire, reloading his weapon behind a marble pillar. "There are too many of them! They have heavy armor!"
"Fall back to the secondary perimeter!" Gabriel commanded, his voice booming over the chaos. "Drive them toward the east wing courtyard!"
As the Valenti guards shifted their fire, a tall, silver-haired man in a dark wool coat stepped through the shattered front entrance below, surrounded by four heavily armed bodyguards.

The man looked up at Gabriel standing on the balcony above, a cold, arrogant smile spreading across his face.
It was Victor Vance.
