Chapter 15 - payoff + open ending

The first rays of dawn broke over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden light through the high windows of the Valenti estate.

The quiet of the morning brought a profound sense of emotional closure to the household. Downstairs in the sunny breakfast room, Mia sat in a high chair, happily giggling as she ate pancakes covered in syrup. Claire stood by the stove, pouring fresh coffee, her silver locket sparkling against her cream sweater.

For the first time in three decades, the Valenti mansion felt like a real home instead of an underworld fortress. Gabriel had reclaimed his family honor, secured absolute safety for his late brother's wife and child, and destroyed every enemy who had sought to tear his bloodline apart.

The Season 1 arc had reached its complete, deeply satisfying victory.

At seven in the morning, Gabriel drove his black sedan alone into downtown Chicago, following the exact coordinates marked on the dusty map he had recovered from Thomas's hidden lockbox.

He pulled up outside an old, six-story brick industrial building near the Chicago River—a building that had been abandoned and locked since 2001.

Gabriel stepped out of the car, carrying the heavy iron key in his gloved hand. He walked up the rusted iron fire escape stairs to the fourth floor, stopping outside a heavy steel door marked with the number 402.

He inserted the iron key into the lock.

The heavy tumbler clicked with a loud, echoey groan. Gabriel pushed the door open, stepping inside.

The apartment was frozen in time, preserved under a thin layer of twenty-five years of dust. White sheets covered the furniture, and old newspapers from October 1999 lay stacked near the entrance.

Gabriel walked into the center of the spacious living room.

His eyes caught a detail that made his blood run cold.

Sitting on the central wooden table was a porcelain mug filled with black coffee. A faint wispy trail of warm steam was still rising from the surface of the liquid into the cool morning air.

Someone had been standing in this room less than five minutes ago.

Gabriel’s hand dropped instantly to the grip of his pistol. His eyes swept the dark corners of the dusty apartment.

"Who's there?" Gabriel demanded, his deep voice echoing off the exposed brick walls.

Silence answered him.

Gabriel took three cautious steps toward the wooden table.

Lying beside the steaming coffee cup was a small, burnt birthday card from twenty-five years ago—an official invitation to Gabriel’s twenty-six birthday party on October 14, 1999.

Tucked beneath the burnt birthday card was a fresh, glossy photograph taken yesterday afternoon.

Gabriel picked up the photograph with trembling fingers.

The photo showed Claire and Mia sitting in the estate garden yesterday morning—taken from a high-angle sniper perspective through a telescopic lens.

Gabriel flipped the photograph over.

Written on the back in fresh black ink was a short, handwritten message in a handwriting Gabriel recognized instantly—the handwriting of his father, Don Carmine Valenti:

May you like

You protected the girl, Gabriel. But you still don't know who killed me on your birthday. Come to Marseilles if you want the truth about your mother.

Gabriel stared at his dead father's handwriting on the back of the photograph, his pulse hammering against his ribs, as the steam from the fresh coffee cup slowly vanished into the silent, dusty room.
