Chapter 9 - the intruder

Gabriel walked down the grand marble staircase of the estate, his heavy boots making no sound against the stone. The mansion was under full tactical lockdown, steel security shutters drawn over every ground-floor window.

He walked straight into the master suite, where Claire sat on the edge of the large bed, reading a storybook to Mia under the soft light of a bedside lamp.

The three-year-old looked up, her face lighting up with a radiant smile as Gabriel entered.

"Mr. Gabriel!" Mia cheered, holding up her storybook. "Look at the big bear!"

Gabriel walked over, sitting beside her on the edge of the mattress. He reached out, his broad, calloused hand gently patting her small head.

"Claire," Gabriel said, looking at the young mother. "I need you to listen to me carefully."

Claire set the storybook down, her expression instantly growing serious. "What is it, Gabriel?"

"The men who killed Marcus aren't just local Chicago gangsters," Gabriel revealed quietly. "They belong to an international syndicate called the Vanguard Crown. They want the locket Marcus gave you."

Claire reached up, clutching the silver locket against her chest. "Why? What's inside it?"

"A key," Gabriel said. "A key that proves Mia is the legitimate heir to the Valenti charter. Without this locket, they cannot seize our shipping docks legally."

"Then take it," Claire offered immediately, reaching behind her neck to unhook the clasp. "Take it and destroy it! I don't care about money or docks, Gabriel! I just want my daughter to be safe!"

Gabriel reached out, his large fingers gently stopping her hands.

"No," Gabriel said firmly, his eyes locked onto hers with unwavering conviction. "This was your husband's legacy. It belongs to Mia. And as long as I am standing, no one in this world will ever take it from her."

Claire looked into his eyes, the deep fear that had consumed her for three long years suddenly giving way to a profound sense of relief and trust.

A sudden, sharp metallic chime echoed through the room.

Gabriel’s internal tactical watch vibrated against his wrist. A red silent-alarm light flashed on the small digital screen.

PERIMETER BREACH — SECTOR 3 (EAST WING SERVICE ENTRANCE).

Gabriel stood up instantly, drawing his heavy pistol from his holster.

"Stay here," Gabriel commanded, sliding a heavy deadbolt into place on the master bedroom door from the outside. "Do not open this door for anyone."

Gabriel moved silently down the east wing corridor, his weapon raised. The hallway lights had been cut, plunging the passage into complete darkness save for the emergency exit signs.

As he rounded the corner near the service pantry, his eyes caught a subtle movement in the shadows.

A tall figure dressed in a tailored black tactical suit was standing outside the security breaker box, holding a wireless decryption tablet plugged into the estate's central mainframe.

Gabriel moved like a phantom, bridging the distance in two silent strides. He slammed his left forearm across the intruder's throat, pinning him violently against the marble wall, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol against the man's temple.

"Don't move," Gabriel growled.

The intruder gasped for air, dropping his decryption tablet to the floor. The tablet screen glowed brightly in the dark.

Gabriel glanced down at the tablet screen. Displayed on the monitor was a live blueprint of the Valenti estate—along with a real-time tracking signal pinpointing the exact location of Claire and Mia’s bedroom.

The master override code displayed at the top of the screen was registered to a high-ranking member of the Valenti family council.

Gabriel pulled off the intruder's tactical mask.

The man pinned against the wall was Paulie—Gabriel's own chief security officer who had served on his personal detail for over twelve years.
