Chapter 1 - The Threat on the Line

The west pantry of the grand Reyes estate smelled of fresh eucalyptus and starched cotton. Afternoon sunlight streamed through the arched windows, illuminating the quiet corner where twenty-nine-year-old Selena Castillo stood folding a stack of pristine white linen napkins. Her long brown hair was pinned into a loose, practical bun, and her modest beige housekeeping dress with crisp white trim and apron looked neat and tidy. At three years old, her daughter Ruby sat on the polished floor beside her, quietly rolling a small pink suitcase back and forth across the marble tiles, her soft brown curls bouncing with every movement.

Selena’s personal phone vibrated against the wooden counter. It was an unlisted, thirteen-digit number.

Thinking it might be a delivery update for household supplies, Selena pressed the phone to her ear. "Hello?"

"Selena Castillo," a cold, distorted voice echoed through the receiver. "Listen very carefully. Do not react. Do not scream."

Selena’s hands froze over the folded linen. A chill ran down her spine. "Who is this?"

"In forty-five minutes, a secondary charge will detonate in the lower service garage," the caller said, his tone devoid of any human warmth. "If you want your daughter to see tomorrow, get her out of that house right now. Walk out the gates and do not tell Damon Reyes."

Selena’s chest tightened so severely she couldn't catch her breath. She slowly turned her head toward Ruby, who was innocently adjusting the handle of her dusty-pink dress and smiling up at her mother.

Across the sprawling corridor, inside the mansion's soundproofed private meeting room, Damon Reyes sat at the head of a long polished mahogany table. At forty-two, the feared Phoenix mafia boss held absolute authority over a multi-billion-dollar logistics and real-estate empire. Tall, muscular, and sharply handsome with dark hair swept back and light stubble along his jawline, his intense dark eyes commanded immediate silence. He wore an elegant fitted black three-piece suit, crisp white dress shirt, and a black tie that matched his polished leather shoes.

Seated around the table were seven of his most powerful regional directors, discussing harbor shipping routes. Standing quietly by the double doors was Marcus Vale, Damon’s forty-five-year-old security chief, dressed in a charcoal suit with a discreet earpiece, his disciplined eyes scanning the room. Seated to Damon’s left was Caleb Ross, forty-three, one of Damon's most trusted inner-circle associates, wearing a dark navy suit and an expensive gold wristwatch.

Without warning, the heavy brass handles of the meeting room doors clicked.

The doors swung inward, and tiny three-year-old Ruby dragged her small pink rolling suitcase across the threshold, the quiet clatter of the wheels echoing against the high ceilings.

Every high-ranking man in the room stopped talking. Eight hardened syndicate leaders turned their heads in absolute disbelief as the little girl in the dusty-pink dress walked directly into the most secure room on the estate.
