Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Vault

By nightfall, the sprawling estate was locked down tighter than a federal treasury. Heavy iron shutters covered the ground-floor windows, and armed security patrols with disciplined attack dogs walked the perimeter grounds under the desert sky.

In the master suite on the third floor, Selena sat on the edge of a velvet armchair, watching Ruby sleep peacefully on the large king-sized bed, clutching her stuffed toy.

The heavy oak door opened silently, and Damon walked in. He had removed his black suit jacket and tie, his crisp white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the slight edge of a dark tattoo on his collarbone.

He set a silver tray with warm tea and fresh fruit on the table beside Selena.

"How is she?" Damon asked quietly, his dark eyes resting on the sleeping child.

"She’s asleep," Selena replied, her voice soft in the quiet room. She looked up into Damon’s handsome, intense face. "Damon... please tell me the truth. Is my husband's death connected to what happened today?"

Damon sat down across from her, resting his broad forearms on his knees. "Three years ago, when Mateo died at the docks, I trusted Caleb’s report. But two weeks ago, my auditing team discovered a discrepancy in our international shipping manifests. Millions of dollars in unregistered cargo were passing through our Phoenix terminals."

Selena’s eyes widened. "Mateo was the harbor manager... did he find out?"

"I think Mateo found the illegal manifests," Damon confessed, his expression grim. "And I think he was eliminated to keep him quiet. Today, whoever was running that shadow operation realized my auditors were closing in. They tried to use your employee credentials to wipe the old server logs stored in my private vault before I could read them."

Tears welled up in Selena’s brown eyes. For three years, she had believed her husband’s death was a tragic twist of fate. Realizing he had been murdered to cover up a corporate crime filled her with a mixture of profound grief and burning anger.

"Who was Mateo working with back then?" Selena asked, her voice steadying.

"Caleb was his supervisor," Damon said. "But Caleb doesn't have the intellect to run a shadow logistics network of this size alone. Someone higher up—someone with international connections—was pulling his strings."

A soft knock at the door interrupted them. Marcus Vale stepped into the room, holding a physical black leather binder retrieved from Caleb’s private safe in Scottsdale.

"Boss," Marcus said, his disciplined face dark. "We cracked Caleb’s safe. He kept physical copies of every transfer route from three years ago. But there’s a problem."

"What problem?" Damon asked, standing up smoothly.

Marcus opened the binder, pointing to a signature at the bottom of a land transfer deed dated the week of Mateo’s death.

"Caleb wasn't sending the stolen funds to an offshore bank account, boss," Marcus revealed. "He was funneling them directly into a real-estate holding company owned by your own regional director in New York—Victor Vance."

Selena gasped, stepping back toward the bed. Victor Vance was Damon’s oldest business partner, a powerful syndicate leader who controlled the eastern shipping corridor.

Damon’s dark eyes flashed with lethal fury. "Victor."

Before Marcus could respond, the estate’s emergency lighting suddenly flickered twice and died, plunging the entire third floor into absolute darkness.
