Chapter 9 - The Warmth of the Estate

By noon the following day, the bright desert sun bathed the Reyes estate in a warm, golden light.

The dark clouds of betrayal and danger were gone. The security shutters had been raised, allowing fresh air and sunlight to flood through the tall arched windows of the grand mansion.

In the spacious, sunlit kitchen, Selena stood near the marble counter. She was wearing a fresh cream-colored dress, her long brown hair resting softly over her shoulders. For the first time in three years, the heavy shadow of worry and fear had vanished from her eyes, replaced by a deep, serene peace.

Little Ruby was running happily across the polished floor in her dusty-pink dress and cream shoes, pushing her small pink rolling suitcase behind her, laughing as she chased the estate's gentle golden retriever through the open terrace doors.

Damon stepped into the kitchen. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, dark trousers, and his luxury watch, looking relaxed and approachable.

Selena turned around, offering him a warm, radiant smile that brought a subtle flush to her rosy cheeks.

"Good morning, Damon," Selena said gently.

"Good morning, Selena," Damon replied, walking over to the counter and accepting a cup of fresh black coffee she poured for him. "How did you sleep?"

"Better than I have in three years," Selena confessed, looking out at Ruby playing on the lawn. "Marcus told me what happened last night... about Caleb and Victor Vance. He said Mateo’s name has been completely cleared."

Damon took a sip of his coffee, looking into her brown eyes with genuine warmth. "Mateo was a hero, Selena. He died protecting this estate. His memory will always be honored in this house."

Selena took a step closer to him, her eyes shining with emotion. "I don't know how to ever thank you, Damon. You saved my daughter. You gave us a real home."

Damon set his coffee cup down on the marble counter. He reached out his broad, calloused hand, gently covering her small hand.

"You don't owe me anything, Selena," Damon said softly, his deep voice resonant and sincere. "As long as I am standing, you and Ruby will never have to worry about your safety, your future, or your home again. You are family now."

Selena looked up into his handsome face, feeling a profound sense of warmth and security that she had thought was lost forever. "Family."

Down on the sunny terrace, little Ruby stopped playing and looked back into the kitchen. She grabbed the handle of her tiny pink suitcase, wheeling it right up to Damon’s shoes.

She looked up at the broad, intimidating boss with her large, expressive eyes and held out her small hand.

"Look, Uncle Damon!" Ruby cheered innocently. "My suitcase is clean now!"

Damon let out a low, genuine laugh that echoed warmly through the sunlit room. He dropped to one knee, taking her tiny hand in his broad palm.

"It’s a very fine suitcase, Ruby," Damon said with a genuine smile. "Where are you traveling today?"

"To the garden!" Ruby announced proudly, pointing her small finger toward the blooming rose bushes outside. "To find flowers for Mommy!"

Damon stood up, offering his hand to Selena. "Shall we walk with her?"

Selena smiled, taking his arm. "I’d love that."
