Chapter 1 - The Basin Beneath the Maple

The Rossi estate sat on a sunlit bluff overlooking the Hudson Valley, an magnificent stronghold of dark granite, manicured gardens, and towering oak trees. Inside its walls, power was absolute, but joy had been absent for four long years. At forty-three, Lorenzo Rossi was the undisputed leader of New York’s most formidable syndicate—a tall, muscular man with thick dark hair, intense dark eyes, and subtle ink etched along his neck and hands. Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit and an open-collar white dress shirt, he ruled his empire with cold, unyielding precision.
Yet, his formidable heart broke every time he looked at his six-year-old daughter, Isabella. Ever since the tragic loss of her mother, Isabella had retreated into an unshakeable silence, confined to a sleek black wheelchair, her legs unresponsive and forgotten beneath pale pink floral dresses and soft cardigans.
On a crisp autumn afternoon, Lorenzo stood by the tall arched window of his third-floor office, holding a glass of untouched bourbon. His sharp eyes scanned the estate grounds below, stopping on the large red maple tree near the central stone fountain.
Sitting beneath the canopy of crimson leaves was Isabella, staring blankly at the grass. But she was not alone.

Kneeling on the cobblestones beside the wheelchair was three-year-old Emma, the daughter of the estate's newly hired housekeeper, Sophia. Emma was a fearless, vibrant child with golden-brown curls, wearing a soft pink lace dress and a knitted cardigan. In front of her sat a heavy brass basin filled to the brim with warm water, floating with crushed mint, fresh rosemary sprigs, dried chamomile, and delicate flower petals.
Lorenzo’s dark brows furrowed as he watched from above, his jaw tightening as he wondered what the maid's child was doing with his fragile daughter.
