Chapter 7

Brooke began cooperating when her own lawyer saw the full transaction file.

She did not receive immunity.

Nobody promised it.

She simply understood Victoria had protected herself better than she had protected Brooke.

Brooke admitted the recordings were purposeful.

“I thought we were documenting Leo’s behavior.”

“Why use Liam?”

“I didn’t want to.”

“Yet you did.”

“Yes.”

“What did Victoria mean by natural comparison?”

Brooke looked ashamed.

“She said if Leo was upset while another child was calm, it showed the environment wasn’t the problem.”

That logic was grotesquely convenient.

Same room.

Different treatment.

Then call the different reaction evidence of character.

Brooke continued.

Victoria instructed staff to give Liam a chair even when Leo was told to sit elsewhere.

Extra dessert.

Access to the game room.

Brooke sometimes objected.

Not enough to leave.

Why?

Money.

Her Westbridge payout.

Her consulting relationship.

And ambition.

Victoria had promised Brooke a permanent communications role after the acquisition.

Then investigators asked:

“Did Dominic know Leo was being isolated?”

Brooke hesitated.

“He knew there was a behavior plan.”

“What plan?”

“Victoria called it boundary consistency.”

“What did that include?”

“Not rewarding crying. Making him stay where he was told. Keeping Liam’s routine normal.”

“Eating on the floor?”

Brooke looked down.

“I saw it Sunday.”

“Did you tell Dominic?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Brooke swallowed.

“He said, ‘Mom is taking this too far.’”

“And then?”

“He didn’t stop it.”

That answer mattered.

Then Brooke disclosed a meeting.

Friday evening.

Victoria.

Dominic.

Brooke.

A family-law consultant.

No therapist.

The subject:

What evidence would support a short-term caregiving order if Clara resisted a proposed “stability plan”?

The consultant warned them:

A judge would not remove a competent parent because she traveled for work.

They would need genuine child-welfare concerns.

No manufactured incident.

No coaching.

No provocation.

Dominic asked:

“What if existing behavior worsens while she’s away?”

The lawyer answered:

“Document reality. Do not create it.”

Everyone heard the same warning.

Then Victoria said after the lawyer left:

“We’re not creating his temperament.”

Brooke remembered Dominic saying nothing.

The next morning, Leo lost his seat at breakfast.

By Sunday, cameras were recording his reactions.

Clara’s early return Monday stopped Dr. Weller’s Tuesday evaluation.

The sequence was becoming difficult to describe as accidental.
