Chapter 5 - The Gala of Whispers

"Don't touch those documents, Luca," Jessi said, her voice eerily calm as she stood up from the floor, holding the black journal behind her back.

Luca laughed, stepping into the library as his three guards surrounded Jessi and Patricia. "You really thought you were smarter than my father? This house is monitored by private servers you don't even know exist. The moment you opened that safe, an alert went directly to my phone."

One of the guards stepped forward, reaching out a broad hand to grab Jessi's shoulder.

Before the guard's hand could land, Jessi dropped her weight, brought her elbow up sharply into the guard's solar plexus, and slammed her heel down onto his foot. The guard groaned, collapsing to his knees on the rug.

The second guard drew a taser from his belt, but Jessi grabbed the first guard's arm, spinning him around to use as a shield. The taser prongs struck the guard's vest. Jessi disarmed the second guard with a swift palm strike to his throat, sending him crashing into a glass display case.

Luca backed away toward the doorway, his face going pale with shock as he watched his trained security detail neutralized in less than ten seconds. "What the hell are you?!"

The third guard hesitated, looking at Jessi's icy, unyielding stance, and wisely chose to lower his weapon.

Jessi stepped over the fallen guards, picking up her tablet and the black journal. She walked straight up to Luca, her dark eyes piercing his soul.

"I am the woman who is taking everything you own, Luca," Jessi whispered, reaching out to gently pat his white hand cast. "Now get out of my way."

The following evening, the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel burned with the light of three thousand crystal chandeliers. High-society figures, corporate executives, and city politicians gathered for the annual Vance Enterprise Charity Gala.

Arthur Vance stood near the head table, wearing his sharpest black suit, sipping champagne as he conversed with three major investors. He was attempting to maintain the illusion of absolute power, but his dark eyes kept darting nervously toward the entrance.

The heavy double doors opened.

Jessi stepped into the ballroom. She wore an exquisite, dark emerald velvet evening gown that draped with regal grace over her frame. Her dark brown hair was styled elegantly, her posture proud and unyielding. Walking beside her, wearing a stunning navy silk dress, was Patricia.

The ambient chatter in the ballroom died down into a sudden, hushed wave of whispers.

Arthur’s champagne glass froze halfway to his lips. He watched in utter disbelief as his abused wife walked into the highest-profile event of the year, standing proudly beside the woman who had broken his son's hand.

Jessi offered Arthur a cold, radiant smile as she raised a glass of sparkling water toward him.

"Let the party begin, Arthur," Jessi murmured softly to herself.
