Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Mirror

By six o'clock that evening, the rain over Vance Manor had stopped, leaving behind a crisp, cool autumn sunset that bathed the gray-stone estate in golden light.

Moving vans were parked along the gravel driveway, clearing out Arthur's personal antique collections and corporate archives.

Inside the sunlit drawing room on the second floor, Patricia sat in a plush armchair near the window, sipping warm tea. She wore an elegant dark green wool dress, her white bandage replaced by a small, discreet dressing. Her fair skin was glowing, her dark eyes clear and filled with a peace she hadn't known in thirty years.

Jessi walked into the room, holding two airline tickets to Geneva, Switzerland.

"The restructuring is complete, Patricia," Jessi said with a warm smile, sitting beside her. "The Sterling-Vance Foundation is officially active. Your personal bank accounts have been restored, and Arthur's legal team informed us that he will be taking a plea bargain to avoid a public trial."

Patricia looked out the window at the rolling green hills of the estate. "I spent thirty years believing I was weak, Jessi. I thought if I just stayed quiet, if I just bore the hits, he would eventually stop."

"You weren't weak, Patricia," Jessi said gently, taking her hand. "You survived. You kept your heart alive in a house of monsters. That takes more strength than Arthur ever possessed."

Patricia looked down at the airline tickets in Jessi's hand. "Geneva?"

"I thought we could use a break," Jessi smiled softly. "My father left a small villa overlooking the lake. It's quiet, beautiful, and completely free of Vances."

A soft knock sounded at the drawing room door.

Jessi’s chief security officer stepped inside, bowing his head respectfully. "Mrs. Vance... an encrypted satellite transmission just arrived for you on the private terminal."

Jessi’s brow furrowed slightly. She stood up, taking the secure tablet from the officer.

The screen displayed a high-priority message sent from an unlisted server in Zurich.

Jessi opened the file. As her eyes scanned the text, her smile slowly vanished, replaced by a razor-sharp, intense focus.

The message read:

Jessi Sterling—Congratulations on dismantling Arthur Vance. But Arthur was only the secondary trustee. The master shareholder of Sterling Inc. resides in Zurich, and he has just activated the secondary recall clause regarding your father's original assets.
