Chapter 6 - The Broken Mirror

The charity auction was halfway through when Arthur finally managed to corner Jessi in the secluded, marble-lined corridor outside the VIP lounge.
"You think you can parade my wife in front of my business associates and embarrass me?" Arthur growled, his broad chest heaving as he trapped Jessi against a marble pillar. "You have until midnight to hand over that black journal, Jessi, or I will have Patricia committed to a private psychiatric facility in upstate New York."
Jessi didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of her sparkling water, looking up into Arthur's cold eyes with quiet disdain.
"You can't commit her, Arthur," Jessi replied smoothly. "Because as of four o'clock today, Patricia was legally declared of sound mind by two independent court-appointed psychiatrists. Furthermore, she filed for immediate legal separation."
Arthur’s jaw set like iron. "You think a piece of paper stops me? I own the judges in this city! I own the police chief!"
"You owned them, Arthur," Jessi corrected gently. She pulled her phone from her beaded clutch, displaying a live video feed on the screen.
The screen showed two black federal sedans pulling up to the front entrance of the St. Regis Hotel. Six federal agents dressed in dark suits were stepping out onto the red carpet.
Arthur’s face drained of all color. "What did you do?"
"I didn't just give the black journal to the police, Arthur," Jessi whispered, leaning closer so only he could hear her voice. "I sent a digitized copy of your murder confession, along with thirty years of offshore tax evasion records, directly to the Department of Justice."
Behind them, the heavy velvet curtains of the VIP lounge parted. Luca stepped into the corridor, his white hand cast held awkwardly against his tuxedo.
"Dad!" Luca panicked, his voice high-pitched. "The federal marshals are in the lobby! They're asking for you!"
Arthur turned to his son, his arrogant facade completely shattering into pure, naked terror. "Luca... get the car. We need to get to the airport!"
"Nobody is going to the airport, Arthur," Jessi said softly.
From the end of the marble corridor, four federal marshals approached, their badges glinting under the wall sconces.
"Arthur Vance?" the lead agent announced, pulling a red arrest warrant from his jacket. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, and the 1998 homicide of Thomas Sterling."
Arthur backed against the marble wall, his hands trembling as the agents stepped forward and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Luca stumbled backward, clutching his broken hand, looking at his father in absolute horror as the mighty patriarch of the Vance family was dragged down the corridor before the eyes of three hundred high-society guests.
Jessi walked back into the grand ballroom, where Patricia stood watching from the balcony.

Jessi reached out, taking Patricia's hand into hers. "It's done, Patricia. He will never touch you again."
Tears of profound relief spilled down Patricia's cheeks as she pulled Jessi into a tight, emotional embrace.
