Chapter 1 - The Lullaby in the Dark

The grand banquet hall of the Moretti estate burned with the artificial sun of three thousand crystal chandeliers. Baccarat glass clinked against vintage champagne bottles, and the heavy aroma of slow-roasted meats mixed with expensive French perfume. Hundreds of high-society figures, syndicate lieutenants, and corrupt politicians moved across the polished oak floor, all gathered to celebrate the annual Moretti inheritance banquet.

At forty, Celeste Moretti was the picture of aristocratic perfection. Draped in an extravagant emerald evening gown that draped around her frame like liquid silk, she dripped with diamond earrings and a cascading diamond necklace that caught the light with every subtle breath. She held a crystal champagne flute, her red lips curved into a sharp, calculating sneer. To the world, Celeste was the sophisticated, beautiful fiancée of the undisputed syndicate boss. To those who knew the inner workings of the empire, she was a venomous opportunist waiting for the slightest sign of weakness.

Near the lavish dessert table sat eight-year-old Ellie Moretti. She was a vision of pure innocence amidst a den of wolves, dressed in a pale-lavender formal dress, a soft cream cardigan, and velvet flats. In her small hands, she held a tiny porcelain plate with a slice of cake.

Celeste glided forward, her emerald heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. With a cold, deliberate movement, she grabbed Ellie by the arm and shoved her roughly away from the family table. The porcelain plate slipped from the little girl's hands, shattering violently against the floor.

Before Celeste could step forward again, thirty-five-year-old Clara Vale rushed into the frame. Dressed in a classic black-and-white maid uniform and practical flats, Clara immediately stepped between them, her slender frame creating an impenetrable shield in front of the frightened child.

Celeste glared down at the maid, her eyes narrowing into slits of pure disgust. "Stop pretending you’re her mother," Celeste said coldly, her voice carrying clearly over the ambient music.

At that moment, the heavy double doors of the banquet hall swung open.

Victor Moretti stepped into the room. At fifty-two, the legendary Mafia Boss commanded the entire hall without uttering a single word. Broad-shouldered, muscular, rugged, deeply masculine, and terrifyingly composed, Victor radiated an aura of unyielding authority. He wore a custom midnight-black tuxedo, gold cufflinks gleaming at his wrists, a luxury wristwatch, and polished leather shoes. Every eye in the room turned toward him in silent deference.

Just as Victor entered, Ellie started crying, her small shoulders shaking. Clara instinctively kneeled beside the little girl, gently cupping her pale, rosy cheeks. In a voice as soft as velvet, Clara began to hum an old, melancholy lullaby—a gentle, soothing melody that echoed softly through the quiet corner of the room.

Victor froze.

His broad chest stopped moving. His dark, piercing eyes widened as the notes reached his ears. Ellie stopped crying immediately, wiping a tear from her eye, and looked up at Clara with wide, wonder-filled eyes.

"Only her mother knew that song," Victor said, his deep, gravelly voice stunned, cutting through the silence of the room like a blade.

Celeste’s face flushed with sudden rage. She lunged forward, grabbing Clara by her uniform collar to drag her away. "Get away from her, you filthy servant!"

Before Celeste could pull Clara an inch, Victor moved with blinding speed. His massive hand clamped around Celeste’s wrist, yanking her off Clara. Without a second's hesitation, Victor brought his broad palm hard across Celeste’s face.

CRACK!

The open-handed slap sounded like a rifle shot. The sheer power behind the blow sent Celeste staggering backward, her emerald dress rustling violently as she crashed sideways into a padded armchair, dropping her champagne glass onto the rug.

Gasps reverberated through the hall.

Clara stood up slowly, her hands trembling. She rolled up the left sleeve of her maid uniform, revealing a faded, old hospital identification mark micro-engraved into the skin near her wrist.

"I woke up with no name… and no baby," Clara whispered, her voice trembling with raw, agonizing emotion.

Ellie slowly reached out her tiny hand, her small fingers wrapping around Clara’s trembling thumb.

"Mommy?" Ellie whispered softly.

May you like

Celeste’s expression instantly turned from anger to pure, unadulterated panic.

Victor stared at the mark on Clara’s wrist, his jaw setting like iron. He looked at the surrounding bodyguards. "Lock the doors," Victor commanded softly. "Nobody leaves this room."
