Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Contract

The matte-black interceptor boat cut through the towering ocean waves, arriving at a secluded, rain-draped dock near the abandoned St. Jude Private Clinic thirty minutes later.
The clinic was a dark, foreboding stone structure perched on a desolate cliff overlooking the sea. Its windows were boarded up, its grounds overgrown with wild weeds, looking like a forgotten tomb in the storm.
Marcus led Clara and Ellie through a rusted side entrance, their flashlights cutting bright white beams through the dark, dust-filled corridors.
"Stay close to me," Marcus whispered, his hand resting on his sidearm.
They descended a flight of crumbling concrete stairs into the sub-basement archive. Rows of rusty steel filing cabinets lined the damp walls, smelling heavily of mold and old paper.
Clara walked down the center aisle, her fair skin tight with remembered dread. As her flashlight beam struck a heavy iron door at the end of the hall marked VIP ARCHIVE 2018, a sudden, sharp memory flashed through her mind.
She remembered being rolled down this exact hallway on a gurney, a cold leather strap securing her wrist, while a man's voice whispered above her: "She will never remember her name."
"It's in here," Clara said, her voice sharp as steel.
Marcus stepped up to the heavy iron door, using a tactical crowbar to pry the rusted latch open. The door groaned and swung inward.
Inside sat a single mahogany desk holding a heavy, leather-bound medical ledger stamped with the official seal of the State Department of Health.
Clara stepped up to the desk, flipping the heavy pages until she reached September 14, 2018.
There, written in faded black ink, was the complete, unedited record of her delivery. Glued to the page was a official bloodline certificate bearing the thumb-print of Don Falcone alongside the signature of Celeste Moretti.
"It's all here," Clara wept softly, clutching the ledger against her chest. "The proof that Falcone orchestrated the entire theft!"
Suddenly, the heavy iron door of the archive was kicked open from the outside.

Standing in the doorway, surrounded by four armed mercenaries, was Celeste Moretti. She wore a dark rain coat over her emerald gown, a cruel, triumphant smile on her face as she held a sleek silver pistol aimed directly at Clara's chest.
"Hand over the ledger, Clara," Celeste sneered. "Or your daughter dies first."
