Chapter 13

Marina requested a mediated meeting with Damian two years after Julian’s birth.
Celeste declined to attend.
Damian respected that immediately.
Marina began:
“I never wanted to take Julian from you permanently.”
Damian stared at her.
“You arranged a flight.”
“I thought it would be temporary.”
“To another country.”
“Yes.”
“Without his mother.”
Marina closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Without me.”
“Mom said once you understood the danger, you’d agree.”
“What danger?”
“If you were indicted. If Celeste panicked and disappeared.”
“Did she ever say she would disappear?”
“She said she wanted out of the estate.”
“That is not the same sentence.”
“I know that now.”
Damian leaned back.
“No. You knew it then.”
Marina looked up.
He continued.
“You just preferred Mom’s version because it gave you a role.”
Her face tightened.
“I was trying to protect him.”
“He wasn’t born.”
“That doesn’t mean there was nothing to protect.”
“Correct.”
Damian’s voice remained steady.
“He needed protection from you.”
Marina started crying.
Then she said something Damian had not expected.
“I was jealous of Celeste.”
Not romantically.
Not of her marriage.
Of her ability to walk away.
Marina had spent her entire adult life managing Ravello crises.
When Damian disappeared for days, Marina handled lawyers.
When Helena fought with partners, Marina repaired relationships.
When family businesses needed signatures, she organized them.
She became valuable by being available.
Then Celeste entered the family and started saying no.
No to the estate.
No to Helena’s doctor calls.
No to family security inside her bedroom corridor.
No to Marina deciding which relatives attended the delivery.
Marina hated how easily Celeste claimed a freedom Marina had never allowed herself.
“So when Mom said the baby needed continuity,” Marina whispered, “I thought I was finally protecting something important.”
Damian answered:
“You were protecting the system that made you important.”
Marina looked down.
“Yes.”
That admission did not make her innocent.
It made her motive coherent.
Then she asked:
“Will I ever meet Julian?”
Damian did not answer for Celeste.
He did not offer reassurance.
“I don’t know.”
“I’m his aunt.”
“Yes.”
“I loved him before he was born.”
Damian’s face hardened slightly.
“That sentence is not as persuasive as you think.”
Marina cried quietly.
May you like
The meeting ended without promise.
For once, she was forced to live with a relationship she could not administratively schedule into existence.
