Chapter 5

Marina’s involvement became harder to explain.
At first, evidence supported her claim that Helena had driven the plan.
The earliest guardianship draft came from Helena.
The false signature image came from Helena’s computer.
The notary dealt with Helena.
The private aviation concierge dealt primarily with Helena’s assistant.
Then investigators opened Marina’s encrypted family-office messages.
She knew more.
Three weeks earlier:
Marina:
Celeste will never approve international travel after birth.
Helena:
She will if Damian is unavailable.
Marina:
That still doesn’t make me guardian.
Helena:
That is why the papers matter.
Marina:
Not if they challenge them.
Helena:
They only have to work long enough.
That sentence became important.
Marina replied:
Long enough for what?
Helena did not answer in writing.
Then another conversation.
Marina:
No airport is putting an unnamed newborn on a flight because you wave family papers.
Helena:
The child will have documents.
Marina:
How?
Helena:
Stop asking questions you are not prepared to help answer.
That helped Marina.
She understood the plan was irregular.
She did not yet appear to know every step.
Then investigators found her calendar.
Two days after Celeste’s scheduled induction:
Consulate — newborn registration hold
Three days after:
Milan contingency
Five days after:
Dr. Bellini — infant intake
Dr. Bellini was a pediatrician near the family villa.
Marina had emailed him.
We may arrive with my newborn nephew unexpectedly. Family disruption. Need private intake and no media.
He replied:
Of course. Please bring parental authorization and complete medical records.
Marina:
I will have legal authority to travel with him.
She had written that seven weeks before the baby’s birth.
Detective Warren asked:
“Who told you that?”
“My mother.”
“Did Damian?”
“No.”
“Celeste?”
“No.”
“So you knew neither parent had given you authority.”
Marina’s face tightened.
“I knew they had not given it yet.”
There.
Yet.
Like Helena, Marina had started treating future consent as something time would eventually produce.
Then investigators discovered what Marina had shipped to Italy.
Not just clothes.
A bassinet.
Infant formula.
A car seat compliant with European standards.
Diapers.
A white-noise machine.
Two boxes labeled:
NEWBORN — FIRST 3 MONTHS
Marina called that preparation.
Celeste called it what it felt like.
“Someone was building my baby another life before he was born.”
Damian listened without interrupting.
Then Celeste asked him:
“How many times did I tell you your mother wasn’t joking?”
He answered:
“Too many.”
May you like
No defense.
That silence was the beginning of him finally understanding that protection after discovery was not the same thing as believing his wife before proof arrived.
